Picked up awesome Dynahoe 4x4 Loader/Backhoe, has 453 Detroit Diesel, early eighties, late seventies.

It seems the best oil out there for it is the Delo 100 straight 40 weight (nice low sulfated ash), but I happened to find SAE 40 HD oil at the local Tractor Supply and was wondering thoughts on using it.

One issue I have is that the only spec on the container is API Service SN which I know stands for 'Spark/service' or gas vs the C (Compression/Commercial) which I would like to see.

Maybe I should try to contact Traveler and see if they will provide some real specs, or maybe someone here has some more info about this oil.

It says HD, which would make me want to think shear and soot should be ok, but still I'm weary to put it in with only API SN.

Found this post, not sure of the final answer though.

Wrong oil-that's a passenger car oil! You need an oil with the CF-2 spec, such as Rotella T1, Delo 100, etc. There is 1 15W40 that carries that spec, Delvac 1300, but DD never approved multigrade oils for a 2-stroke diesel engine, such as a 4-53.

We also ran Delo 400 15w-40 in 8-92's, Cats, and Cummins. It was a one motor oil for engines outfit. Zero engine failures.

OK, thanks for the info. I wonder why it's only API S (passenger car) but called HD on front label. Traveller makes a non detergent SAE 40 Oil that they call 'Standard' which I know wouldn't be good to use.

Was hoping the HD would make it OK.

Big shame not to be able to put this oil in the 453, good price and right off shelf.
