I am assuming one needs to spend over $100 to get a heated diode one vs the ones for $30 to $40?

I have an SPX electronic sniffer like this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Robinair-16600-Electronic-Leak-Detector/dp/B000JFL8Q6

It works fine for DIY projects. I've found that leak detection with this unit depends on good technique; no cross drafts, good probe handling, etc. The detector can go off several inches from the actual leak so through probing is a must to pinpoint the leaks.

Once you get used to how it works, it's pretty easy to use effectively.

Well I like the price of the Roninair one better than the others, but at least one review on Amazon mentioned basically you need to be in an garage or similar with no wind or draft.

That's been my experience as well. This was also the case when I used to use an old school propane-type refrigerant leak detector back in the 1970's.

It makes sense that being in a relatively draft free area as possible is SOP when trying to detect refrigerant leaks.

Ditto on the Yokogawa. Heavy, but it never gives a false positive. I always had problems with the corona detectors as far as false positives and tracking down really tough to find leaks. When the Yokogawa beeps, you know there is a leak. Too bad they are so expensive now. Got mine for about $250 back in the mind 90s.
