http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_vehicles_per_capita interesting stats, click on the great map to get a breakdown of cars per 1000 population..If South American had a decent interstate system and economy, the car boom arena would bust loose...............

How did you conclude that?
they are between 151-300, 101-150, 61-100 per 1000 people. I don't see how much will bust loose.

We would definitely win that as we only have about 1000 miles of highway and the rest of the roads look pretty much like some sort of bombarded lunar soil whistle whistle whistle

In a lot of areas of the world because of taxes cars are very expensive as is fuel. What you need is lots of industry and money so people can afford to pay $40k US for a base CRV plus the $6 a gallon fuel to run it. If your a family of 6 living on $800 US a month a car let alone a new one is not even a dream.

Cayman is a microcosm of this, so much money that even with a 40% import duty and $6+ gas people still run around flooring super charged Range Rovers like gas is free. Hong Kong comes to mind as well.
