IMHO HDEO works best in engines without cat muffler systems that don't call for SM/SN type oils. I use Delo 400 XLE 10W-30 in my JD Z with Kawasaki. Any of the good HD oils should work a treat for you.

You have a lot of choices here. I would run 15W-40 because that's what I run in all my outdoor power equip.

I am surprised 5w20 is an option. With a conventional 5w20 running around 15% NOACK you would want to keep a close eye on oil consumption. 10w30 synthetics would be much easier on consumption. That is a pretty decent sized oil capacity though at 2.2 quarts with filter change.

I would start with a 10W30 synthetic followed by a HDEO 10W30.

This guy knows what he is talking about. +1

My 501v calls for 30wt HD first on the sticker on the side of the engine and 10w30 as the second option. I tried the 10w30 for a while but always got blue smoke on startup...especially after sitting a while on startup when the engine was still hot. Never have had the smoke on startup using the 30wt.
