The new Jeep Grand Cherokee turbo diesel has a ZF-8HP70 and it is according to Chrysler "fill for life".My question is how long is filled for life?It has a drain plug and the filter is part of the composite transmission pan.i was thinking about buying one of these Jeeps but this filled for life is a bit of a worry. The fluid ZF-Lifeguard8 is not cheap. Thanks Joe

Dually,

The ZF 8 speed slushbox is used by Bentley, Audi, BMW, and many more high end cars. It is great in service and has proven to be quite durable.

A fluid exchange early in its life is always a good idea as most of the debris is generated while it is young. After that 30k exchanges for severe service or 60k for easy driving.

Vehicles are appliances too.

Usually 150k or so is the intended service life for most of these things. Of course, your operating conditions will dictate the actual service life.

People on BITOG talk about appliances as though they are a bad thing. Stuff has a finite life; it's not supposed to last forever.

Transmissions last a certain amount of time. Usually by the time that your car needs a transmission, other parts are starting to wear out as well and you should consider getting a new car.

As my dad often tells me, I should find a useful, profit-generating hobby that allows me to buy new cars than to worry about trying unproven ways to extend the life of consumables. And he's probably right...

I guess the question would be how long would it last on the OE fluid vs regular changes.

In the past there was a measurable difference, and fluids were required to be changed more frequently - and the transmissions didn't last as long as many do today even with good maintenance.

This is a rhetorical question, as I would still change the fluid regularly, I just dont know if you are talking about a 5% increase in life or 50%. It could be that a change at 30k would be all that is required to get it through its useful life.

It uses Shell L12108 wich seems like a fluid thin as dex6 and atleast redline recommends their D6 and valvoline says maxlife.
so there are atleast some alternatives...
Lets hope theres a plug on it also.

Well it seems like its both a level plug and a drain plug.
- thats good news...
It also seems like you do level check at ambient temperature and doesent need to have a computer.
- thats more good news...
( i can hardly belive that its necessary to factor in the temperature of the oil unless theres a design flaw making the tranny exeptionally sensitive to oil level, and such tranny shouldnt be used in a jeep anyway.)
But whats not so good is that the pan and filter are one unit and probably rather expensive.
I´ve only found prices for bmw units and the chrysler pricing may differ alot if i compare euro spare part prices.

I just bought a 2014 Ram with this same transmission.

Even though the Ram only has 500 miles on her.

I would like to plan for the future. This will probably be the ONLY new auto I will buy, and maybe my last.

Doing a lot of research on the Service of and Service intervals of this transmission is kind of very little information. Or I'm looking in all the wrong place.

The owners manual really says nothing about the service of the 8HP70. Just states the fluid type.

If any of you who own this transmission or have done service on one can you please share some information? Thanks

The fluid may be extremely expensive now, but in a few years, I'm sure it will cost much less.

I remember when my car was new, DCTF was uncommon, and cost over $30 per liter. about 6 months ago, I was able to get the DCTF for closer to $15 per liter.

ZF 8-speed ATF may be around $35 per liter now (From Blauparts), but 3 years from now, it should be closer to $15 per liter.

How much is that filter going to cost? It sounds like it will be expensive.

ZF typically has a sever service schedule of approx 45k-70k miles. As others have said, the fluid will get cheaper as time goes on. Thectsc.com is a favorite of BMW and Jaguar owners. I bought my oil change kit from this company.

LG8 can be had from them for about $22/liter.

Artificialist: On my Ram the Plastic Pan and filer are 1 unit.

Craziest thing I have ever seen.

I guess I will put the worries away until I reach the 45K mile mark. Maybe by that time there will be alot more Ram owners some what concerned on this matter. It will take me about 4 years to reach that mark.

Hopefully as you all have posted the Price for ZF fluid will have dropped in half.

Thanks Guys!

Just drive it, gear boxes have improved, I see plenty of lifetime filled 722.6's running around with 200k++ on the original fluid and they are fine.
