Well I didnt want to believe it as BITOG has made me as much of a purloator fan as the next. But now I have seen it with my own eyes. about 7,500 miles with kendall 10w-40 in 04 dodge neon.

Since my stash was out, I had to go and buy a filter, it got replaced with a fram ultra.. I even found myself eyeballing the tough guards. What a turning point for sure.

Thanks for cutting it open and posting.

Yup, I've been a Purolator user for a good while now, between Classics and P1s but the last few months have been disappointing. Until they acknowledge and remedy the problem, I'm staying away.

Because it is a metal crimp piece. It is more ridged and also does not allow fluid to pass (so no fluid is applying as much force).

Thanks Tex for posting.

Email or call Purolator. They will send you a filter recovery kit with free return shipping!

BITOG also converted me to Purolator, then I cut open a P1 with torn media!

yeah I forgot to say I fired off a email to them about it.

Use them for target practice on an outside shooting range.

If we ever get spring,I will be cutting open a Mopar filter. However the ones I use were made a number of years ago, hopefully before Purolator's recent slide in quality control.

I have to say, I'm now strongly considering buying a Ultra, and pulling the Motorcraft off my focus right now :| I don't know if I feel comfortable leaving it on for 8k miles, what with the insane occurrence of torn puro filters. And it apparently doesn't seem confined to just the P1s.

7.5K is a lot of miles for a cheap little filter like the Classic. What does Puro warrant them for?

I don't think at all for mileage, but it doesn't matter. They should never tear in a reasonable amount of time. 7500 is perfectly reasonable. If we were talking like 20k+ then I might agree. But this should NOT be happening.

They warranty them for the oil change interval recommended by your vehicle manufacturer's service schedule.

2014 - The year of the "Purolator Media Tear Scare".

What was a memorable occurrence in 2014 on BITOG?

Well, it was the PMTS ... Purolator Media Tear Scare. :)>o)

I'm gonna run the P1 that I have waiting to go on my truck, but instead of leaving it on for more than one OCI like I had planned to I'm only gonna run it for 6 months (which is less than 3,000 miles in my short-tripper). I'll still cut it open when I'm through with it though, and my goodness, if my P1 shows tearing after less than 3,000 miles then I'm swearing off Purolator forever. We'll see come fall.

Until I see some evidence that this is fixed, I'll be exclusively running FRAM Ultras from now on. My my how times have changed. Dumping purolator for FRAM. Never thought I'd see the way that this happened en masse on BITOG.

I have to say.....this seems like a bit of a overreaction. Yes I know that they shouldn't be tearing, but these are mass produced products. If they find and fix the problem, I see no reason to swear them off like some of you have said.

^^^ Well, swear them off for the next 6~12 months while they figure out a fix and get updated filters into the marketplace.

This is becoming epidemic. I took a L10241 off my son's Sebring just a few months ago but didn't cut it, now I wish I had. I'm betting it was okay though as it was a shorter OCI it seems the problems are showing up at 5k plus. But I'll never know for sure now.

As always, thanks for cutting and posting!
