I just changed fluid on my daughters 2008 Jetta 2.5. I drained only 2.5 quarts. I removed drain plug the the ATF level plug and only 2.5 quarts came out. I the put ATF level tube in filled it ran it through the gears with car level and correct temp and could only put 2.5 quarts in. It seems a like a small amount to drain. I used the below diy to help me out. Should I have any concerns.

The factory service manual states that upon draining the pan the refill amount is 3 liters. I suspect that you are pretty accurate with the amount that you drained.

You have to reinstall the drain plug (after installing the overflow tube), start the car and let the fluid reach the prescribed temperature of 35º-45ºC and while it's running you remove the drain plug and let the excess flow out. Three-hundred to 400 milliliters wouldn't be unusual to have flow out of the overflow pipe.

FovVay,

Thanks I feel better now.

barlowc, just a drain and fill. Cant see the filter holding much fluid.

Boy I sure do miss having a dipstick. It sure made things easier!

When I had a 2008 MINI Cooper S with the same automatic transmission it was called sealed by MINI. I belonged to the owners forum at North American Motoring dot com and along with another member came up with a method to change the ATF and posted the PDF on the site. I think the VW version actually has a fill hole which makes it easier to fill and drain than MINI which only allowed access through a semi hidden T55 bolt.

The average amount drained was about 2 quarts. I did get that VW tool to pump most of the ATF back thru the drain hole, it was much faster than trying to pour it all in via the tiny T55 bolt hole. I would finish filling thru the T55 hole.

To simplify matters we just changed the fluid while the car was cold and the new ATF the same temp. Measure what was drained and pour that amount back in. 3 changes a week apart would replace 85% of the fluid. The Aisin called for Toyota T-IV ATF fluid at $5 a quart or the MINI equivalent at $25 a quart! I used Mobil 1 with no problems, others have used Amsoil, Royal Purple or Redline with no problems.

Here is a link to the page with the PDF.

thanks for the link lots of good info there, i happened to find it on my own while researching this fluid change. I used mobil 3309. I was able to make my own tool using a bolt with same tread and drill press.
