I have some Supertech Power Steering Fluid and wonder if it is safe to use in a GM vehicle.

According to the owner's manual, they state:

GM Power Steering Fluid (GM Part No. 89021184, in Canada 89021186).

Are they saying you MUST use GM Power Steering Fluid or else? Except for Honda, I've read that power steering fluid is just a hydraulic oil with some conditioners.

Thanks.

If they state you MUST use their specified fluid or oil, they must provide it for free per the Magneson moss act.You probably need to dig a little further in the book to where is says use their stuff, or an acceptable alternative with a spec of xxxyyyzzz.,,

The owners manual does not state you MUST use GM power steering fluid, just that is all they have listed.

Honda states that you must use Honda power steering fluid and you must use Honda ATF, but I don't see the dealership giving it away.

Correction: Honda states you must use a fluid that meets their [Honda] specification. Napa sells two different fluids under their own brand name Mac: one for Honda/Acura; and one for everything else.

The ST fluid should be fine for your Silverado, just don't use it in a Honda.

This is directly copied from the 2003 Accord owners manual

Quote:

Always use Honda Power Steering Fluid.
If it is not available, you may
use another power steering fluid as
an emergency replacement.
However, continued use can cause
increased wear and poor steering in
cold weather. Have the power
steering system flushed and refilled
with Honda PSF as soon as possible.

Nowhere does it state that use power steering fluid that is Honda approved. Looks and sounds to me like if you use anything BUT Honda Power Steering Fluid, you are SOL.

I have successfully used Honda/Acura approved power steering fluids from NAPA, Prestone, and Advance Auto Parts for many years without any problems, leaks, or issues of any kind.

Any rate OP, you'd be fine with the ST PS Fluid in your GM.

GMs don't care what goes in the ps system. If they make noise you can try the cold weather psf, but they run on standard psf. I would try to get one that mentions gm approval if possible. I hear some run atf fine in the system but in my 2002 Buick I just run Prestone psf.

Exactly.

As long as the fluid from the aftermarket is specifically formulated for Honda PS systems and it is a well known reputable brand you have no worries. The product should say for Honda power steering systems right on the bottle itself.

I would stay away from unknown brands because in those cases you never know even if they claim something.

Warranty language always uses weasel words. The main recommendation to **always** use something isn't the same as the warranty language. Those state that if someone is cause by the use of "unapproved" parts or fluids, they aren't required to fix it under warranty. Technically the manufacturer is supposed to demonstrate that improper maintenance caused a failure.

Still - one time I found ACDelco PSF pretty cheap in pint bottles.

I too have used Hond type P/S fluid such as Bardahl P/S fluid for Honda/Acura but, those who live where it gets extremely cold in the winter may want to stay with the actual Honda Brand, as it does handle the extreme cold better than the off brands do.

Also, I have used Honda brand or type P/S fluid in GM vehicles with very good success especially to cure whining/groaning p/s systems. Just a thought!

all lubes that wal mart carry and sell are made for wal mart specs are dumb down so wal mart can sell them at their price....why would anybody want to purchase any lubes from wal mart to save money. your engines cost 5-7000 bucks to fix it just never made any sense to me why people do that!! of course you will find people on this site will argue that point..for instance saw castrol yesterday has wall mart on the back of the bottle..

So buying a 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 or Valvoline SynPower from Walmart is a dumb idea? I guess buying the same 5 quart jug from Napa or Advanced Auto would result in better lube?

Have you had good luck with this fluid in Hondas?

I too have had good success using any generic PSF in my GM & Chryslers and have had good success using Bardahl & Pyrol(for use in Honda/Acura) in Honda P/S systems.

But, I have had poor success using the wrong P/S Fluid in Honda vehicles. So IMHO, Honda owners need to stay with the correct P/S fluid be it Honda Genuine or aftermarket P/S fluid for Honda/Acura.

LMAO, prove this. Come on, I dare you.

I'm sure that he/she will explain why in perfectly punctuated sentences.
