What oil do Chevy Trailblazers like?

My grandma has a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer LTZ with about 96k miles. I changed the oil August 2012 with GTX HM 5w30 and a Wix filter, it only has about 3k miles on the oil at the most, I was thinking of using 10w30 since Phoenix only gets down to 35 degrees at the very least, more like 40 and up to 115-120 in the summer, what do these 4.2L I6 Vortec motors like? GTX or Valvoline ML? Thanks

They like a ton of gas. as far as oil any name brand 5w30 will do. 10w30 would be ok. 5w30 is preferred.

My 2003 ran smooth on GTX HM 5w30 for about 2k miles before piston slap became noticeable. I got about 2500 miles out of Havoline 5w30 before it started to get noisy. No noise at all with Mobil Special 5w30 before changing at 3500 miles. Current fill of Mobile Super 5000 10w30 is still going strong at 4k.
I have always run conventional oil, but may try some synthetic like Castrol Edge 5w30 next change, but, knowing me, I'll cheap out and stick with Mobil Super. Heck, maybe splurge for Mobil Super HM, it is an SN/GF-5 blend that runs no thicker than regular oil.

It gets 18.5 mpg consistently with about 60% city 40% highway, and 20 easily at 80 mph in the mountains.

Mine's been pretty happy with M1 0W-40 and PU 5W-40. No CAFE rubbish here, so the manual states anything from 0W-30 to 20W-50 can be used as long as it meets ACEA A3.

Your current combo is fine. I would use Max Life interchangeably with gtx. Can't go wrong with the wix filter. Stick with the 5w30.

Clean the throttle body, replace O2 sensor and plugs and it will run great.

GC is a thick 30wt which would be great in a hot climate....I found quite a bit at AutoZone for $3 per quart.

GC on clearance is always a time to stock up.

The manual for my 2003 Trailblzer states that 5W30 is preferred, but that 10W30 is acceptable when temperatures are above 0 F. I live in Tucson and have used both without issue. There also weren't any noticeable differences between various brands. I suggest that you not use a High Mileage oil unless there is excessive oil consumption. My 2003 has 146K miles and oil consumption is negligible.

A cold start is a cold start even in Arizona, unless your ambient temp is 100C. I would use 5w30 if i was buying it, but 10w30 if i had it on clearance only. I wouldn't pay retail price for 10w30 anymore.
