Hey everybody! Long time lurker and finally decided to join since I really couldn't find the answers and insite on Mag 1 oil.... I'm building a new motor 406 sbc, which is a flat tappet engine and I've really been concerned about todays oils and zddp levels. Anyhow long story short I found Mag 1's website and 3 of the oils really caught my attention but I wanted the pro's (you guys) to look it over before I purchase any of it. The oil specs are on the links, the Fleet version really caught my eye but they all look good to my untrained eyes lol.

The prices on Mag 1 oils is really good off amazon, which is really the only forum info I found on the oil... that and its made by Warren which makes Supertech but anyhow if y'all would, take a look and tell me what u think please. And if anyone has ever used it, please share. Thanks a ton guys

It is pretty good for the price and if you watch that 5w40 sometimes it's even cheaper.

Right now this stuff would at least be good for break in duty. It pours like a 5w30 but claims to be a straight weight.

At least for break in duty? You wouldn't suggest to continue to run it even after break in? I'm just trying to avoid the zinc oil additives, treatments, ect and use a oil that will protect my cam-lifters while not completely breaking the piggy bank lol.

Hi RyanR and welcome to BITOG,

Of the three HD Mag 1 oils I'd go with the 5W-40, it's actually lighter than their 10W-30, has a lower NOACK although still not great at 13% for a heavy 30wt oil.
But as you've noticed it has a high Phos' level typical of a HDEO.

Awesome and thanks for the greeting. Yeah that may be plan as I do like the longevity of a syn. My original plan was to run the readily available Rotella triple T but I keep finding more and more info saying Rotella has lowered its zinc and phosphorus levels too low for flat tappets.... so here I am.

I have the Euro 5W-40 variety in my engine right now. No problems. My engine's easy on it though so I have no fear going 10k miles with it. I still have oil consumption, which is a feature for my car, but no leaks.

I bought a pack of 6 qts through Amazon and they were fast and reasonable. Not getting it anymore since 0W-40 M1 jugs with higher VI are available at my WalMart now.

Hmmm.... well thats interesting... the T6 is pretty comparable with triple T other than T6 being a syn, is it not? Maybe I've been mislead about the newer Rotella's

On a side note, at least Mag 1's advertised specs looked fairly close to the VOA

T6 is of course superior to triple T because it is synthetic including all that entails including a higher viscosity index.

Mag 1 5W-40 claims a Phos' level of 1,150 ppm although the VOA determined it is only 921 ppm.

That VOA is for Mag 1 5w40 Euro, not Mag 1 5w40 All Fleet, that is why the Phosphorus is lower. They have 2 different 5w40's.

Oh I thought it said .0902.... maybe my ignorance on oil is showing through lol... well I did some looking on here and obviously I was ill informed... seen the VOA on T6 and triple T and both look exceptionally good compared to what I've heard from a lot of hot rodders. Gonna look for a T5 VOA now... the Mag 1 stuff does seem good dont get me wrong but I'd rather use Rotella because its actually an available item in my tiny 2k population town lol.

Its nice knowing I do have a few reasonably priced good oils to choice from though.

Thanks man... and I hate to say it but all the hot rodders I've talked to have given me poor info... so I'm gonna listen to y'all. And yeah the motor is a 406 sbc, Promaxx aluminum heads, custom cut lunati hydraulic tappet, LT headers, ect... all going in my 96 Z71 lol... I need a lil mode torque

Yeap, that's my VOA, I have MAG 1 all fleet 5w40 also, which I will put in after 5w-40 Euro, into bimmer, and do UOA. But that will take another year.
