What is the difference between Fram extended guard and Fram ultra. Both filters have the same code numbers "XG". Also how come you can't buy the XG30 in stores ?

Why? It's true, see bottom of this article:

FRAM Launches Extra Guard Plus and Ultra Oil Filters
November 10, 2011

Guarding your car’s engine from dirt and contaminants will soon reach a whole new level as FRAM, a leading oil and air filter manufacturer, adds two new premium oil filters in 2012 to its line-up. The new filters, FRAM Extra Guard Plus and FRAM Ultra, tout some of the best media quality and extended mile options available to consumers.

“When it comes to ensuring proper engine function and oil flow, choosing a high-quality oil filter is key,” said Jim Brown, marketing leader for FRAM. “After extensive product development and testing, we’re excited to offer consumers two new premium oil-filter options that couple superior media quality with increased filter life.”

With the addition of FRAM’s Extra Guard Plus filter and FRAM’s Ultra filter, its comprehensive line-up helps consumers find the ideal filter to help keep their engine running strong.

Featuring a strengthened nitrile silicon O-ring for improved longevity of up to 10,000 miles, the FRAM Extra Guard Plus also incorporates an improved synthetic cellulose media blend that traps 99 percent of all dirt and particles. In addition, it offers six times the engine protection of other premium products. Equipped with dual-layer synthetic media and reinforced by metal screen insets, FRAM Ultra provides exceptional performance lasting 15,000 miles. The internal, anti-drain valve contains enhanced nitriles – the O-ring – that promotes enhanced longevity, and the filter is optimized for use with synthetic and conventional motor oils.

Both Extra Guard Plus and Ultra are equipped with SureGrip technology to ensure easy installation and removal. As with all FRAM products, the two new filters undergo rigorous testing to ensure they are able to withstand even the most extreme engine environments.

FRAM filters can be purchased at automotive retailers across the United States.

Uh..."nitrile silicon"? Even ignoring the obvious missing "e", how can it be both nitrile AND silicone?

Way to impress, FRAM...

lol i seen that too. huh?

John_K - No, its not true. The bottom is Autozone's rebates. Has nothing to do with Fram's announcement. The Xtended Guard and the Ultra have different medias, efficiency ratings, capacity.

Xtended Guard:
- 97% @ 20 micron Efficiency
- 10,000-mile change interval under normal driving conditions using fully synthetic motor oil.

Ultra:
- 99% @ 20 micron Efficiency
- 15,000-mile change interval under normal driving conditions using fully synthetic motor oil.

Many threads about that recently on on here.

I see some well known Fram haters jumping on this thread so its time to go.

notech 47 is correct.

The Xtended Guard is being replaced by the updated Ultra.

The XG is no longer listed on Fram's website and the Ultras have taken over the part numbers with the "XG" prefix.

Emphasis added.

No, he isn't really correct. It is not just a new name it is a different filter, I think that is the point.

At this point, I see it as the same filter that's been upgraded a bit. It's just the way different people view the situation I suppose. They are very similar and carried over the same part numbers.

Besides the release of the Ultra what's interesting about this press release is that I have not seen the new and improved orange can Plus in stores yet, but the Ultra has been for some time. No mention on their website either. What's up with that? Change their mind?

As for Ultra, not sure what all the hub bub is about calling it the new XG? The Ultra supersedes the Extended Guard by going to full synthetic media, improving the efficency and extending the max recommended fci to 15k. Basic construction difference though is going to full synthetic media. Still uses the XG prefix for it's filter applications though.
