Where do you get replacement vacuum hoses?

In many older cars, engines are strong mechanically but soft parts, specially rubber hoses, start to rot, crack and leak causing all sorts of issues. Where would you buy generic replacements? (I wouldn't want to pay a 500% dealer markup on such generic part)

auto parts stores have it by the foot.

Problem is winding up with "emission hose" when you don't necessarily require it. It works but is thicker like fuel line. It's more universal and can take gas fumes.

You can also use (drumroll) fuel line but it's pricey.

I asked at O'Reilly auto parts, and the kid there had no idea what I am talking about.

If you ask the counter person at the parts store for vacuum hose and he doesn't know what you're talking about you then ask him for someone who knows what they're doing.

They have vacuum hose.

Measure the ID of your old hoses first or bring a sample so you get the right sizes.

o'reillys has the cheapest hose per foot that i need, plus its been gates brand which i like. advance is pricer.

I go to the nearest part store and buy lengths of vacuum hose, the I cut to fit.

That in mind, that isn't always and option. Many cars have hoses with weird sharp bends and branched paths that can only be replaced with some dealer-only part. This usually happens on Fords and on European cars.

And some of those dealer parts are ridiculously expensive. Some creative measures will often work. I used an old right angle spark plug boot that was a perfect fit (different sizes on each end). Check the HELP section of any parts store for fittings which can be combined with regular hose. Even metal pipe fittings with hose can work.

Good advise above - watch those sharp bends.

Around here, Autozone has the hose diameter periodically marked on the hoses, where as the stuff from Advance Auto does not. That's reason enough to go to Autozone. Neither stocks very many sizes.

Generic hose is everywhere usually. Around me Monument Auto has good stock in this kind of stuff. Was in there a few weeks ago asking for 5/16" vacuum line. When I told him I needed 20 feet he looked at me as to say WHAT? I said have you ever seen the amount of vacuum line that goes into a 1967 Mercury Park Lane to run all the vacuum actuated accessories?

I never knew a 1960s car would have so much vacuum stuff.

Whenever I think of cars with numerous vacuum lines, I think about all 1970s engines, and 1980s engines with carbs.
