Hi I have been looking for a good 0W30 oil my thinking is that weight of oil has to be using a high quality base oil to be able to meet that grade. I know GC is a 0W30 oil and that is a very good oil however it is a bit higher priced I have seen that BWM makes a 0W30 Oil but I believe that is oil in Europe. Amsoil makes a good 0W30 but pricey. I don't think M1 makes a 0W30 at least not for the Canadian Market that I have seen. Are there any other good 0w30 Oils ?

I know there's a few Canadian guys here who would point to something like Mobil Delvac Elite 222 0w-30, though I have no idea where to get it personally.

The Imperial Oil distributor would be about the only place.

A favorite on this site is to blend 0w20 Toyota Genuine Motor Oil with M1 0w40. This is called the "Caterham Blend", and gives a higher viscosity index and more robust additive package than M1 0w30 AFE.

Careful! That will get you labeled as one of the thin crowd!!

Unfortunately AFE 0w30 is not sold in Canada. And nothing in a jug with Mobil 1 on it is $25 here either! I'm not even sure if that would be a sale price!

Delvac or the Petro-Canada products at the distributor are a good choice. PC has Supreme Synthetic and Duron, both are decent although Duron is a bit "heavy" but still a valid option IMO. Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 has very good cold weather properties as well. Of course there is the blend.

For cost, I'd go with the previously mentioned Petro-Canada Supreme Synthetic 0w-30. Its gas station price is better than the average Walmart non-rollback synthetic price, and I'm sure you can do even better at the distributor.

That would be very light, down in to a 20.

About...
40C - 45.2
100C - 9.7
HTHS - 2.8

I stuck with 60/40 as it kept me in a 30 but next summer I may go to a 50/50 if I stay with the blend.

The idea of the blend is to get the high VI, not just go light. Even at 50/50 the blend will be lighter on start up than PP but should be close on HTHS.

Yes that sounds like a heavy 20 Weight or Light 30 Weight Oil, It is more difficult to get a 60/40 mix than a 50/50 or 75/25. I was thinking 75/25 in the winter and 50/50 in the summer.

Well if you're dumb like me it can cause some issues....

This is how I ended up at 65/35 on my first run, I mixed up the 0.6 & 0.4 when topping off to full. Now I just picked up a 1 liter measuring cup at the dollar store and pre-mix into bottles.

Honestly, I really like the Duron. Nice UOA in the G5 at 16000km with lots of TBN left to go farther along with the good cold properties.

Here's some info....

Code:

75/25 60/40 50/50 PP Duron PC M1 Delvac

cSt@40 45.2 50.7 54.7 57.5 61.3 61.9 61.7 69.0

cSt@100 9.7 10.5 11.1 10.3 11.1 11.2 11.0 12.2

HTHS 2.8 3.0 3.1 3.1 3.3 3.2 3.1

VI 208 204 201 170 177 177 173 177

-15 714.90 854.36 965.74 1432.53 1439.46 1451.44 1515.82 1663.67

30 65.36 73.92 80.26 87.61 92.93 93.84 93.99 105.10

cp3, great chart!

One small correction, is that the PP 5W-30 shown is the SM version. Also the HGTHSV of Mobil Delvac is 3.5cP.
The current PP 5W-30 GF-5 SN oil has a HTHSV of 3.0cP, 177 VI and MRV of 13,300 @ -35C.

Another blending option is using PC 0W-20 MRV 15,100cP, HTHSV 2.7cP with PC Duron 0W-30 MRV 17,456cP. A 50/50 blend will produce a light 0W-30 (HTHSV 3.0cP) and a MRV likely under 17,000cP.

of course for a winter oil, ideally we need to know what the lowest typical start-up temp's Dan Miller will be seeing in Winnepeg. If they're anything under about -30C then you've got to include M1 AFE 0W-20 (MRV 10,400cP) and Mobil Delvac 0W-30 (MRV 14,900cP) in a 50/50 blend (btw Mobil approved).

Oops good catch, not sure how I missed that, too many spreadsheets I guess because I do have that PDS.

And thanx for the Delvac info, don't know why it's not on the PDS.

Give me a few minutes and I'll get that updated!

Hi cp3 that is excellent ! I sourced out Mobil 1 0w40 at a great price it works out to 7.50 a litre I just have to buy 12 to get that price. I think I will start with a 75/25 blend for the winter.

Thanks

In January it can average around -30c but generally it isn't that cold. I think I will stick with 0w20 for the winter then go to a 50% Toyota 0W20 / 50% 0W40 Mobil 1 in the summer. I haven't used Mobil 1 for years but after seeing this site. http://bmwservice.livejournal.com/27699.html I am more interested in getting some. There has been a few BITOG Posts about that site and I there was discussion that most engines don't get to 400C
except in hot spots so my thinking is that over time the oil will be subjected to those temperatures so it is a valuable test.

Interesting link. What language is that, looks Cyrillic like Russian?
Lots of info. Wish there was an English translation version.
Interesting which oils had high deposits like Red Line.

Hi yes I believe it is Russian, I will there might be a way to translate it by running it through another site ? Not sure but I will look.

Translation Site
http://webtranslation.paralink.com/

It would take a while but if there is a section you want to read you could translate it.

I translated the first line to this

At heating, oils break up to three visually; (Russian Word ) on a gleam of a phase. It well is visible on illustrations:

http://translate.google.ca/ - this is a better translator it isn't limited in characters and it will read the text to you.
