Hey guys. Just purchased my first boat. 22ft pontoon. previous owner has installed a 90hp Honda four stroke motor on the thing and it has been sitting for a while. I think it is about a 2000 model engine and If I am not mistaken I believe the model number is BF90. I will be rebuilding the carbs this weekend as well as doing some general maintenance, and I wanted to get some opinions/recommendations on what oil for the crank case and gear lube for the lower end. I believe this motor calls for 10W30, but i would prefer a 5W30 Full Synthetic if everyone thinks this will be in spec well enough for the engine. Sorry to drop this on you all last minute. I'll be starting this little project tonight so your timely response is appreciated!

I'd buy a marine oil a 90hp outboard takes an unbelievable beating vs a car engine.

Probably also want to stick with the recommended grade due to shearing/fuel dilution

5w30syn vs 10w30syn I dont see where in a boat would be much different its never going to be cold enough that there would be much difference.

also get a marine grade lube for the lower end.

My preference would be Kendall fs 5W30. The 5w20 I use in my car has returned excellent UOA results. Manual recommends quiksilver gear lube. it's on the shelf at wal-mart which makes it easily available... but what about quality?

Marine or HDEO, I wouldn't run a automotive spec 5-30 in it. Marine engines shear oil a lot more, and have a lot more fuel dillution issues. There aren't a lot of 30 weight FC-W oils out there so your choices are really the Honda Marine oil on the high end (or some other even more expensive xw-30 FC-W oil) or a HDEO on the low end (like Rotella T5 10w-30 or 5w-40).

well we do keep HDEO here at the warehouse. Any suggestions of what Kendall products would be safe to run in the application? super dxa 15w40? FS5w40? straight high performance 40w?

thanks so far!!!

I have high performance kendall 30w and 40w at my disposal here the product pages from the manufacturers.

This is no place for a modern ILSAC-rated engine oil.

I just looked up the manual and it recommended 10w30 or 10w40, API SG or SH. The SAE 30 you have would probably do just fine, or a 10w30 HDEO. No need for a full syn. here, fuel dilution and moisture usually dictate the OCI.
