Hello everybody! I have read and found lots of great info on this forum over the years but never posted since I was a oil info newbie and didnt have much info to add to most conversations.

With that, I just picked up a 1991 Ford Escort with a 1.9l and a 5 speed manual. The car only has 84K miles on it and has been well cared for and is in very good condition for its age. The previous owner kept a journal in the glove box of all maintenance and the oil was changed every 3K miles. However I do not know the type of oil that was ever used and the journal stopped at about 70K miles. I bought it from an estate sale so obviously I cant ask much about the cars history. My question is what would you recommend to run in the car? The spec calls for a 5w30 and it looks very clean when I shine a light down the oil fill in the valve cover. I want the car to last since it is now my run around and save gas vehicle! Thanks.

That's a good find, I would change all of the fluids on it just because it is over 20 years old and you don't exactly know how resent the last fluid changes were.

PYB (pennzoil yellow) 5w30 and a good quality filter like wix, purolator, m1, k&n, bosch will suit you well

Basically just no fram, super tech, STP, or random brand filters.

This! A nice pick up as well. Got pics?

The 1.9's are very easy on oil.

Just find 'any' conventional 5W-30 on a good sale, and change it every 5-6k miles. Keep an eye on the oil level to make sure it doesn't burn a lot.

I dont have any pics, but it is a clean little car. It sat in a parking garage so the sun didnt have a chance to fade everything away.

The little maintenance book in the car says 5w30 standard or 10w30 in hot weather climates.

Some of those SOHC 1.9s were prone to dropping valve seats on certain cylinders.
