I often read the varnish is not harmful but sludge is, what are the differences between them? thanks..

Varnish is a cosmetic issue found on non-moving parts where oil vapors condense and form a deposit. It is a solid. This is pretty normal on the insides of valve covers, etc.
Sludge is, well, sludgey liquid. It's everywhere, on moving parts. It's not a solid though it could contain solids of some sort. It's getting pumped through your engine. Bad news.

^Whick can lead to caking and 'sludged up' terms. Discoloration is harmless, varnish may be harmful on moving parts, but sludge is the terminal diagnosis. Varnish may be a precursor to sludge.
Issues with carbon deposit formation lead to sticky varnish + propensity to sludge up if let go on apps prone to such things or that have been abused.

+1 Exactly! When varnish get into lifers/lash adjuster, cam phasers, hydraulic cam chain tensioners, rings, etc it is anything but cosmetic, it can stick these parts together like an adhesive.

Many here say varnish is harmless. Where you see a lot of varnish ring coking is suspect. I personally want my engines as clean as possible.

thanks very much! i will book mark these 2 thread as well! I will go through these 2 thread to determine if I have varnish to worry about at next oil change
