My Hyundai Trajet 2.7 v6 automatic gearbox is slipping between gears. It has 230000 kms on the clock. I have no idea if and when last the ATF was changed as I bought it used no FSH. Fluid is slightly brown. Im thinking of doing an ATF oil change before having it checked at the agants or specialist shop. Am I wasting money doing this anybody got some thought on it

Possible three things.Defective input or output speed sensors or TP sensor.Pretty common. Before do anything please check Any DTC's current or history set in the PCM.

You will need a scanner. Let a specialist shop do it.

Hi Mate.
If you have a OBD scaning tool then you can do it.But better take the vehicle to the local garage and ask them to check the trouble codes. Also PRNDL switch also a common problem in your model.(With out checking the codes we are just guessing here.)
Complete ATF change also a good idea.
Cheers.
Bob.

Thanks for suggestions have contacted a Hyundai approved repairer who suggested I bring the vehicle in. I subsequently found fluid level a bit low and asked what fluid to use just to top up. I was told Castrol Transmax Z which is green and not red like normal ATF. Manual says to use SP111 which I cant find. Hyundai Dealership also uses the Transmax Z. Any thoughts on the Transmax Z.

Castrol Transmax Z is not SPIII approved.

What model year? If it's a 4spd auto, it's most likely an F4A51 trans. These transmissions require an ATF suitable for Hyundai/Kia SPIII use. They're easy to service. There's a bottom mounted drain plug and you add new fluid through the dipstick tube. I'd first try a drain/fill to see if that helps.

Some of the early models (2001, maybe 2002) had a top mounted spin-on trans filter. If there's no external filter, there's nothing else to service. There's an internal filter that requires removal of the valve body to replace.

Also- do the PRNDL lights on the dash, coincide with the floor shifter? If not, there could be range/mode sensor issues that could cause shifting issues. That's a fairly easy repair to replace the sensor.

Joel

IT IS A 2005 MODEL 4 FOREWARD SPEED AUTOMATIC BOX, INCLUDING THE OVERDRIVE. BOTH HYUNDAI AGENT AND HYUNDAI APPROVED BOX REPAIRER USE CASTROL TRANSMAX Z. I DONT BELIEVE THE GEARBOX IS SLIPPING BECAUSE WHEN ACCELERATING THE BOX SHIFTS EFFORTLESSLY. ONLY WHEN DECELERATING OR COASTING THE BOX CHANGES TO LOWER GEAR PREMATURELY SO WHEN YOU ACCELERATE AGAIN IT IS WRONG GEAR. AM TRYING TO AVOID EXPENSIVE "STRIP & QUOTE" SO AM TAKING IT FOR COMPUTER DIAGNOCTIC CHECKS TO SEE IF IT IS SPEED CENSORS OR SOMETHING ELSE ELECTRONIC

JTK IT IS A COLUMN SHIFT NOT FLOOR SHIFT AND GEAR POSITIONS COINCIDE WITH DASH INDICATOR. ITS NOT SO EASY TO MANUALLY SHIFT INTO 2 AND 1.

Possible vehicle speed sensor (VSS) problem?

Like said, the F4A51 will set it's own diagnostic codes, but if one is set, your check engine light will usually be lit to show this.

Hi Joe, my Trajet does not appear to have a check engine light is this normal. Anyway I had the diagnostics checked and a PO120 (Throttel Position Sensor)DTC came up. Technician at the Hyundai approved repair centre maintains this could be the problem. They are now wiating for a replacement part. Will do a ATF flush and refill at same time. Once again they confirmed they use Castrol TRansmax Z. As approved repairer they should know what to use.

Good deal!

TPS problems are fairly common on the Hyundai 2.7 and 3.3L. If yours has electronic throttle control, I'm surprised you've never been left in 'reduced power mode' when the TPS acts up. That's the typical result. You'll get just enough throttle control to get off the road.

Hi still the problem persists. They replaced the TPS sensor and after test driving the DTC still showed the TPS sensor with a fault plus a few others. After spending a week at the gearbox "Experts" with only a list of faults to be attended to by Hyundai, the vehicle was taken to Hyundai. After another week of fiddling with the electrics, cleaning connections etc I was told no more error codes were found. The problem has still not been resolved so its going back on Friday. I give up!
