Ok so my Mrs car is coming up for it's annual 10K service (6K miles in old speak). It's a '96 Corolla 1.6L 4AFE with 174K km on the clock. I've been using Castrol Magnatec 10w40 in it as I got it cheap at my last job. I've since moved jobs & we don't get as good discount on it so I thought I might look at alternatives. We have a very limited range of oil down here in NZ so your recommendations probably aren't available here, I'm struggling to track down 0w30 for my car that's how bad it is.

Castrol 10w40 SN
KV @ 100°C (cSt) - 14.4
KV @ 40°C (cSt) - 99
Viscosity Index - 151

Nulon 10w30 SM
KV @ 100°C (cSt) - 11
KV @ 40°C (cSt) - 72.2
Viscosity Index - 142

Havoline 10w40 SM
KV @ 100°C (cSt) - 14.1
KV @ 40°C (cSt) - 92.8
Viscosity Index - 156

What are your thoughts on these 3? We also get Penzoil, Mobil, Valvoline, Penrite, Fuchs, Total & Shell down here.

here in North America: that same engine (4AFE) typically calls for 10W30 or 5W30.

So, you should go with the cheepest(yet brand name/high quality) 10W40 or 10W30 and be happy.

Q.

So just keep using the Castrol 10w40 I've been using then? I wouldn't gain much (in MPG) by going to 10w30?

I would try the Castrol Edge 0w40 you are running in your other car.

If you don't want to use the 0w40, I agree with Quest, use the most cost effective xw30 major brand you can find.

The three you posted are not magnificent in any way but out of those I would probably use the Havoline, 10w40 sure is thick though.

It is funny we are so used to thin oils in the US now, it would be worrisome for most to use a 10w40 in that engine...lol Keep on searching for the 0w30!

Found some Havoline 10w30 last night at the local department store cheap.
KV @ 100°C (cSt) - 10.2
KV @ 40°C (cSt) - 69.1
Viscosity Index - 132

I might give that a go
