My sister just picked up a 2003 Civic with the 1.7L. She lives in Iowa too so I do most of her oil changes for her. According to Carfax oil was changed at a Honda dealer every 4-6K, so I'm guessing a conventional 5w20 was used. What should I throw in it? It has 169K on her so I thought about using a 5w30, but I dont know anything about Honda maintenance. TIA guys!

Throw whatever you want in it. The engine is easy on oil. If you change regualarly dino is great if she is forgetfull or just not a maintance person get a good syn.

Thanks. I should mention, Im acually from the Gilbert area. Good to see someone else from there

The honda calls out for 5w-20. I have a 2001 civic with about 280000 miles. Have used 5w 20 synthetic for the first 150,000 miles and then began using 5w-30 from then on. The engine now uses about 3/4 of a qt between changes of 7500-8000 sometimes a few more between changes. I would use either and not worry. They are very easy on oil and hold 3.7 qts. so a cheap change.

I had an 01 (same generation as 03) and put 185k on it. I used Motorcraft 5w20. I found it to be a good value for the vehicle. I sold it in 2008 and should have well over 200k on it by now.

I have a 2004 civic with the 1.7 engine. The odometer just passed 60,000 miles. I would use a high mileage 5w20 in yours renegade 987.

I'd go for the Honda Synthetic 0w20 and change every 5-6k. It's dirt cheap and actually pretty good stuff.

Honda Synthetic = Mobil 1, right?

Honda 4 cylinders are so easy on oil you could use Mazola or Crisco with good results. They'll run forever on any API SM/SN 20 or 30 weight oil.

This is my thoughts too.

Serviced a friend's 1.7L 2003, LX model, recently. 5w-20 PYB, next up: Formula Shell 5w-20 SM

Of course, I'm weening them up to 4,000 mile oil changes for starters from 3,000.

I used amsoil 0W20 in my 03 civic for around 11K but have not sent in the uoa yet. Last fill was maxlife synblend 5w30, have 105K on the car now.

0w/5w-20 or 30 weight will do good

Back in the 80's I had an 85 Civic. I always used 10w40 back then. Car ran forever! Now I use 5w30 in my 96 Accord that has 190k on it. Doesn't use or burn a drop between changes. ANY oil will work with these cars.

if it's not consuming oil and engine is mechanically sound. id stick with the reccomended 0w20/5w20. synthetic oils for extended drains like pennzoil platinum or mobil1 advanced full synthetic should serve you well.
