My 2008 Corolla is backspec'd for this grade but I don't see many people running it. The 1ZZFE has a chain (not a timing belt) and most guys seem to stick to 5w30. I have some 5w20 left over from my Honda (PP, PYB, QSGB and QSTP)and I'm wondering if it would be wise to run in my Corolla? Thoughts?

I see u live in New York, try some in the winter time

if its backspec'd I can't see it being THAT bad....maybe not run it so long so it doesn't shear down more

I have used Valvoline Roush 5W-20 it in my daughter in laws 07. MAYBE a tad more noise over SynPower 5W-30. I thought it felt a tad more peppy but will get flamed for that LOL...Otherwise no difference.

Actually the 0/5W-20 oils have been shown to be more shear resistant than many equivalent 5W-30 oils. At least in earlier SL & SM oils. Many 5W-30's sheared into 20 weight not too far into the OCI. Could be different now though with the SN oils.

Whimsey

If your not sure to run it all at once why not half 5w20 and the other half 5w30. If you like it then you can either do it again or go all 20w next time.

It's surprising that so few are running 5w20 in their 1ZZFEs since it was backspec'd. This engine was in most 2003 to 2008 Corolla's and in many Matrix's and Vibe's.

Been running M1 0W20 in the 2007 Corolla for the last 20,000 miles--OCI's of about 5,000 to 6,500 miles, twice a year. No noticeable difference over 0W30 but I wasn't really paying attention. I just like the idea of running the lightest oil I can get away with.

Ive got a lot of 5w20 and a jug of 0w20 on reserve for my toyota right now since I saw it was back spec'd. Just using up the left overs before I try out some 5w20. Im running 5w20 in my del sol right now and its not any different. Temps the same and it runs great.

We are using Mobil 1 0W20 in our 2007 "commuter Corolla" and see no reason to worry or use anything else. Using 10,000 oci intervals the dipstick remains clean.... and nearly full at the end of that time.

Dynamite winter starts on our winter snow-skiing trips at mountain temperatures of - 40f are important to us.....
this year (Jackson Hole, Wyoming) we had a heated basement garage, lol!!

Our commuter Escort went 300,000 miles on the 0W20 with no apparent engine wear, so not at all worried about the Corolla

That's good (reassuring) to hear.
Was your Escort a ZX2 with the Zetec or a 1.9?

Fisskier was the one that convinced me to use 0-20. So far works very well.

And Tig was the one who encouraged me in that direction for the wife's car and it seems to be doing fine as well.

A standard 1994 Escort 1.9 litre. Still in use..... mostly as a loaner to family members, does not burn, leak or drip oil. The Escort only got changes every 20k miles, or annually, sometimes 25k miles...... yes Mobil 1 0W20 the entire time.

I was running VWB 5W-20 in my 98 Corolla for about 3,000 miles. It was the first time I ran that weight oil in it. Engine had 203,000 miles on it and there was no noticeable difference in it's sound or performance. No consumption and no leaks anywhere. Was going to change it out the day after someone decided to make a left hand turn from the right hand lane right in front of me. No more Corolla. Loved that car. Was hoping to take it to 300,000. Anyway, use it with confidence.

I had an '07 Corolla and tried 5W-20 in it, but the engine just felt and sounded better on 5W-30. I used an inexpensive (and at the time, relatively "light") 5W-30 in it, Havoline. That engine loved that Havoline DS. It'd purr like a kitten on it. It was a really nice engine, and I miss that Corolla I had.

Some people have said that their 1ZZFE 'sounded' better on 5w30.
I doubt that using 5w20 in winter would cause any problems and that's probably what I'll do.
Thanks for all your replys.

running 0w30 in my 07 corolla - i believe the car had 0w20 in it before, and it seems there is a moderate drop off in fuel consumption going to the 30
