Does the autozone universal 5yr/150,000 antifreeze have the same stuff dexcool has? Will it eat the gaskets on a GM?

from what I have read any long life/extended drain antifreeze is a dex clone.

I was recommended chevron antifreeze, it is good old green stuff.

The autozone universal is green...but can anyone say for sure if it is a gasket killer?

I doubt anyone can say for sure it is a gasket killer. I also don't know why anyone would think a universal fluid is a dex clone as GM uses dex cool but most others (i wont say all as I do not have proof) use a fluid that is green.

Read the ingredients, if 2-EHA is listed it is a Dexcool clone.

No it isn't.

Some universal coolant replaced 2-EH with something called "NJSTRN QT1" which is a non-silicate, non-phosphate additive that isn't 2-EH either.

However, I don't know how well NJSTRN QT1 works.

Which ones have NJSTRN QT1?

At Advance Auto, their store brand coolant used to be 2-EH, and later they switched to NJSTRN QT1. Certain varieties of Peak antifreeze use NJSTRN QT1 while others use 2-EH. I have never seen a Prestone product with NJSTRN QT1.

You just have to look at the labels on the back of the bottle.

One can not. "NJTSRN" stands for "New Jersey Trade Secret Registry Number."

I know that, but for someone to state that NJSTRN QT1 is not 2-EHA is a baloney. It might be or it might be not. We do not know. I'd rather not take a chance.

[censored] I just toppped off my Mazda3 with some of this pre-mixed universal Autozone stuff-orange jug. 'It says Proprietary Ingredients NJSTRN-QT1' as the last ingredient.

I guess conventional wisdom would say the first ingredient listed is what makes up most of the solution.

The first ingredients are water and ethylene glycol and this stuff is bright green.

The 5 year/150,000 mile claim on the front has me nervous, though as I know it's synonomous with DexCool like products.

You just topped it off, so your engine is not going to dissolve overnight. NJSTRN-QT1 is the last ingredient and it might not be a 2-EHA, we just do not know, relax.
How old is the original coolant in the car? If 2 different chemistries are mixed, do not expect coolant to last 5 years like pure G5 does. If it were my car, I'd do a couple of radiator drain and refills with Mazda/Ford coolant before the winter and plan on doing 2 more next summer, after that you'll have 99.9% approved coolant in and should last 5 years.

Just an update on this, I did replace all the dexcool with the autozone 150,000 mile antifreeze almost 2yrs ago now and I have not had any problems. 165,000 miles on the GM 4.3 liter with original intake manifold gaskets.

I think the truck had about 115,000 miles on it when I did flush out all the dexcool and made the switch. The radiator had a small leak at the time so I replaced that and the thermostat all at the same time, 95 degree weather out a few weeks ago and with the AC on in traffic the motor stays right at 190 degrees.
