The salesman said it was for legroom. If you sit higher your legs are bent and they don't have to be stretched out as far compared to if the seat was lower to the floor. Makes sense I guess.

Why would you not want your legs to be stretched out? As someone with chronic knee problems, I am very much aware that the less bend you have in your knee while driving / riding the better your knees will do. Any orthopedist will confirm the same thing. Poor design.

So these are made by Chrysler in Mexico correct? Same plant that made PT Cruisers?

Car and Driver has a article on one this month. They commented on the lack of headroom, the "muddled and confusing" instrument panel, thick c pillars which cause a major blind spot, the high seats, sloppy shifter, not so great steering since it has electric power steering and 30mpg in a 600 mile test loop combined with a 10.6 gallon tank is only 300 mile range.

They liked the mini cooper over it.

It being made in Mexico takes it off any list *if* I was looking.

I read that review in Car and Driver as well.

This car isn't NEARLY as impressive as I thought it would be - I honesly though this would be the second coming of the Mini - sporty, 'Italian' handling, spritely performance, very sure-footed, great mileage....but the reviews are reading like a Chevy Aveo's.....

2010 Kia Soul 2U - 2.0L I-4, auto; 153k miles.
Castrol GTX 5W-20; Motomaster MPH 9688

2009 Pontiac G5 - 2.2 I-4, auto, 121k miles.
Oil/filter TBD

I like the interior better than the mini. The shifter seemed fine to me (felt similat to honda fit or yaris) and I like the instrument cluster. But I haven't test drove it on the road so no chance to check steering, handling, chasis etc. In terms of interior, no comparison at all to something like the aveo IMO. Not even in the same universe. I would say on par with mini in terms of interior quality. Size wise it felt similar to sitting in the Yaris.

I'm going to check out the cabrio when it arrives in 3-4 weeks. Really the Abarth is the one to wait for probably. A cabrio abarth if they bring it here would have tons of fun factor.

I know for me the mini feels claustrophobic after about 45 minutes in it. I'm wondering if the fiat will feel the same way? My GTI doesn't feel claustrophobic even on an 8 hour road trip. I agree that the car in base form is not as impressive as a I thought it would be but it is well above the korean stuff. Hard to tell much though really without an extended test drive.

P.J.O'Rourke found it favorable compared to the "DumbForAll" (Smart ForTwo).

Not really using a valuable "ruler" for measure. The Smartcar is less than a toy. bop

I'd say his comments are not really positive...
Quote:
The twitchy low speed steering, grabby brakes, not too much power (said it needs the turbo NOW) and 5th gear is not useful.

Pass. Not worth the trouble since its does not get good gas mileage, questionable build and unknown dealerships/network.

I'd rather get something known..

You have to leave the comparison in:

Again, compared to the "DumbForAll". If you disqualify the "slower than a Geo Metro AND has less cargo space AND gets less mpg than a Geo Metro.. DumbForAll" then it does not fare as well

I thought this m.w. comment was funny.

While some might call an Italian car, built by Chrysler, in Mexico, a trifecta of potential trouble

I see this as being initially popular and then tapering off, like:
VW New Beetle
Chrysler PT cruiser
Mini Cooper

Did any other retro-appearing car ever become popular and stay there?

Saw one the other day on the highway. Way to small for me, looks to be one size up from a Smart Car.

Update to my posts above... The hardtop verison (no sunroof) has at least 2 more inches of headroom. It feels like a completely different car compared to the sunroof versions. On the sunroof versions even short people will feel uncomfortable in the passenger seat and average size poeple will have their head touching the roof.

The non-sunroof and cabrio versions are just fine for headroom. Cabrio is cool but to me not worth the huge price differnce (like $4k I believe). Unfortunately the convertible does not come in the sport version, only pop or lounge.

The sport version has much better seats and materials on the inside compared to pop and lounge. The interior upgrades alone are worth the price difference to me for the sport compared to pop versions. Lounge has tons of chrome all around which to me looks very out of place on a fun quirky car. But just personal preference. Didn't test drive but might in the future. Looks like biggest factor on these cars is to avoid the sunroof versions.
