MPG report.

I drove to the Oregon Coast yesterday to see Joel McHale. It was 220 miles roundtrip. I averaged 34.9 for the trip. My GTI's window sticker states 31 mpg HWY. I'm happy with the mpg that the Pentospeed been getting over the Red Line 5W-40. The best I could do with the Red Line was 31.5 mpg. I'm heading down to California this weekend. I will report back after the 1200 mile trip.

Okay guys. 1300 miles trip. and I average 35.1 mpg. I had the cruise set at 73 for the whole trip. Too many Chips hiding along the way.

Haha not disappointed at all, quite the opposite as anytime we learn something that is the whole point! And I'm always after finding the best oil possible for the application. The way to do that is to try new things and experiment. There are lots of oils that we need more testing on for both the FSI and the TSI. Finding that the Pento gives better mpg than the redline is a fantastic discovery. A few mpgs improvement with current gas prices means a lot of cash savings.

That's an awesome mpg. Perhaps the 15ish cst redline 5w40 is too thick for the TSI? Not that many TSI UOAs out there yet but it certainly appears the TSI has better ring sealing than the FSI based on oil usage so that could be the dominant factor. Will be interesting to see the UOA of pento vs. the redline. Another note re MPG, my FSI went from somewhere around 29-30 hwy to 33-35 after cleaning the valves. It's down in mpg now a bit after about 5000 miles on M1 0w40. M1 0w40 deposits are horrible. Significant deposits in only 59 city miles which is crazy. Remains to be seen whether other oils will do better in terms of deposits.

fuel economy is highly correlated with HTHS of oil..I would continue with redline oil just change the viscosity to 0w-30 or 5w-30..stick with ester based oils

saaber1, I found so far M1 0w-40 to be the best of the oils I have tried with Castol Syntec 5w-40 being the worst. Right now I am experimenting with M1 ESP 5w-30 and I clearly hear a difference in the engine. The engine runs significantly quieter compared to all the 40 weight oils I've tried including M1 0w-40. As far as performance, I'm still judging that.

My goal is to prevent 5,000 valve cleanings and attempt to extend it to 15,000 invervals because that is how severe my impact is. I change my oil ever 5,000.

I doubt this will have a major impact on valve deposits. Still a good oil, and you should keep using it if the motor like it.

BTW, for those wondering, Lexus takes a hybrid approach with DI -- they have two injectors, one of which is like non-DI and helps keep valves clean, the other is the primary injector.

I am most interested in the Syntec 5W40 statement.

Do you have a UOA or something that shows the oil did poorly? What made it so bad?

I have a 2011 Audi A4 2.0T and the dealer uses Syntec 5W40.

Thanks.

That PentoSpeed container states it's MB 229.5, but it isn't listed here ; http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229.5_en.html ... interesting.
