I only had a thermostat fail in my 22r toyota once. Other than that I always replace every 100k miles with Stant Superstats.

9 years on My Olds Alero 2.4L & the only reason I changed it was because I decided to change the Hoses & flush as the Thermostat was still good. It was a BIG job on this car!
3.0L in 98 Lumina - replaced failed open t-stat in 2004 at 150k miles
351ci in '96 Bronco - replaced lazy t-stat in 2010 at 200k miles
3.0L in Taurus x2 - both lived to about 150k and neither needed a t-stat
