First of all Sports Authority was having a 25% off sale on all their ammo (still on I think). Started calling around all the stores and found one store (Bellevue Crossroads) that actually had any 44 magnum ammo.....cool - we were headed that way to eat anyway. So I buy one 50 brick. $29. WHAT WAS I THINKING? I should have cleaned them out. Now no more to be had.

So today I decided to buy a few things online from Cabela's and maybe some 44 magnum ammo. I look at the prices....some sorta OK deals, but nothing great, and name brand stuff is EXPENSIVE - real problem is most anything approaching $30 for 50 is BACKORDERED. But only 44 magnum.....what's up with that? Anyway, here's what I ordered, just for for conversation sake (my Christmas money, plus they had a $20 instant rebate for orders over $150):

There still seems to be a backlog of ammo from the Obama ammo shortage and what was explained on an internet post "if it was true" the ammo mfgs and this guy said he worked for Federal/Lake City is that the companies due to the rush of ammo purchases were stripped of their raw? materials so what they did was load military and homeland security type ammo which is 7.62 and 5.56 and 9MM and 40 S@W. Most all the other calibers were not produced and the mfgs are still catching up. Now the socialist state of Kal-li-fornia starting in Feb 2011 will require a drivers license and I think though I am exactly not sure a thumbprint and NO MAIL ORDER HANDGUN ammo so that may cause a burst of buying by the residents.
Anyway have you tried Natchez shooters supply or Wideners Shooting supply There are others but I have ordered from them many times and have had great service? pretty good prices as well.

What other places have you shopped at online? I haven't ordered from this place but the guys at work buy 1000 rds or .223 all the time from them.

Was looking at .44 Magnum ammo hoping to find you a deal Pabs... No dice! And I was complaining the other day to myself that I should have bought a 9mm instead of a .40!

And have you shot the beast yet? I am anxious to hear about how that cowboy gun shoots...Tell me about the recoil!

Thinking of getting a Marlin in .357 maybe.

Yes it will - but it seems that light loading 44 mag is better. Because 44 specials are about the same price, if not more and they can dirty the chamber a bit.

the new cal law has me [censored], i'll just have my dad in AZ buy me some ammo and mail it to me.

Time to start reloading. I can load 454 Casull for less than 40 cents a piece (or less than $20 for 50, with premium JFP bullets), I bet 44 Magnum would be even cheaper. I can't push 45 LC bullets at the 454 speeds, so I am stuck with more expensive bullets. 44 magnum brass and bullets are much cheaper.

I've shot the BVA 240 gr semi-wadcutter hard cast in my S&W 629. It's a mild load that's easy on the gun and shooter and fun to plink with. I'm not sure how well a SWC will feed in a levergun, however.

A few sites I like:

I just got 400 rounds of 5.56 from the Sportsmans Guide for myself for Xmas.

I actually started saving my brass with intent on purchasing a reloader.

www.ammunitiontogo.com Buy a few boxes at 28.95/50 and then after a few you'll be less after shipping then going to the store hoping to find some

I did get a good deal on some 240gr XTP Hornady from Dunhams the other day. 15% off so it made it $19.97 for 20 rounds. I don't complain about that
