There's at least 5 different sizes for the standard type fittings. Normally a standard hydraulic coupler (Lincoln or Legacy brands) will fit them all.

Probably either a stiff or defective coupler. Push harder in case the moving parts inside the coupler are just stiff.

Aren't all hydraulic (zerk) fittings the same?...lots of thread options but the outside is the same? Then you have button head, large button head, pin-type, etc.

Thanks Ken2 and Satterfi, I will put a vice grip on the fitting and see if I can force it on. I see that there are different sizes zerks at Farm & Fleet but the size seems so different that confusion would be precluded. The larger ones are for big ag or construction equipment, I think.

If you force it on, be prepared for not being able to get it off or having to buy a $10 zerk extractor tool and a new zerk.

I have a catalog that looks like there are 5 different sizes of Alemite brand fittings. I could be wrong about it being 5, it could be 3 with 2 being a different shape. It's pretty confusing and annoying because I've ran across different sizes or the head is a slightly different shape and the coupler doesn't fit right.

Don't force it, just push & wiggle firmly.

Alemite doesn't indicate a choice in head styles in hydraulic (zerk) fittings.

Unless the head is banged up, the fitting is some odd foreign fitting, or the coupler worn, I haven't had a problem. I'd like to know more about other zerk head shapes.

You may have one of these two problems.

A: At the tip of the zerk fitting you should see a bump. This is a small ball bearing being held against the body of the zerk by a spring. I have seen many times ( especially on newly painted equipment) the paint film preventing the greasing from entering. I have at times had to scrape the paint off the fitting to get grease to flow.

Additionally the ball may be stuck and a small stiff wire poked into the fitting may dislodge the ball.

Sometimes the only solution is a new zerk. If you need to remove note that some fitting are treaded and some are press fit. This is a good excuse to add to your tool collection and get a zerk removal tool. Most Farm and Ranch stores will carry the removal tool.

If your greasegun head (hydraulic fitting) will not fit over the zerk try adjusting the grease gun head. Mine all have an adjustment feature that regulates how tight a fit you can get between the grease gun and the zerk.

I replaced my old grease gun that was constantly sucking air up the middle of the cartridge with a new pump type with full size cartridge. The fitting will not fit on the zerk on my 02 Silverado. Are there different size tips? This is probably a cheap gun ($16) but why would it be an odd size? Thanks, RW
