We've got a Sprinter at work that sees fairly harsh usage. No warm-up time, high-throttle soon after startup, and so on. I want to keep the motor purring. What's the best overall oil I can pick up for this car, that's easily found OTC at Napa or Wal-Mart? IIRC it has a 10q sump capacity.

Wow oldwolf that must be the only vehicle on the road today that can only use one type of oil .

M1 ESP 5w30 is 229.51 (as are many other Euro 5w30s), but I'm not sure if they're [censored]-bent on using 5w40 vs 5w30. They've got the same HTHS...

Either 5W 30 or 5W40 or 0W30 or 0W40 can be used as long as it is rated MBenz spec 228.51 229.31 or 229.51 for the 2008 Sprinter 3.0TD .

I believe the fill with filter change was like 12 .3 or 12.4 quarts .

I always just put in three gallons and it is just 1/16 " below the fill zone on the dipstick.

Although it in all likelihood makes little difference Rotella T6 is only rated MB 228.31.

And after spending a amont of time on the phone with Shell they would not commit to anything except to say it isn't rated for that engine.

edit to add :
I think and repeat I think it does not have the HTHS qualities needed to make the MB rating - it isn't that far off 3.0 but the MB calls for 3.5 or higher Schaeffers S 9000 has like 4.5 if I recall correctly

Hard to state as Shell hides its ingredients and specs now a days

As long as you're under warranty-it would be better to stick to a Mercedes spec 229.51 oil-unfortunately the only ones that are somewhat easy to find are the Mobil 1 ESP (Pep Boys & AV Lube "dot"com), and the Valvoline Synpower MST 5W40 (NAPA should be able to order it). Other diesel HDEOs such as Schaeffer's, Amsoil, regular big 3 diesel oils (Delo 400 LE, Shell Rotella, Mobil Delvac 1300), and pretty much any easy to find diesel oil have TOO MUCH sulfated ash (over 0.8%) and are NOT RECOMMENDED for use with the DPF emissions system. There are some Schaeffer's fans on here that are pushing it for the Sprinter for some bizarre reason-Schaeffer makes some awesome oils, but in the Sprinter-well, if you have DPF trouble down the road-don't blame me!

He is running a Dodge 2008 Sprinter
Owners manual calls for an oil that meets MB spec 228.51 - 229.31 -229.51

That is what DODGE ( manufacturer Daimler Chrysler at the time ) Called FOR

Is a 229.51 ok sure is a 228.51 ok -- the answer is yes ............

SA is the new boogyman word around here these days it seems

I am not a fan of anything except facts --- unlike others that just parrot what less knowledgeable people say

Apparently MB is not to concerned with the SA which by the way with this oil is .97 :)

You are confusing 2 different Rimulas: R6M (228.5) and R6LM (228.51)
There is a 2nd "boogeyman" that separates 228.51/229.51 from 228.5/229.5: phosphorus.

Yes you are confusing R6M and R6LM. Reading is one of the things I am pretty good at.
The 2nd link refers to R6M, not R6LM.
