OEM was Mercon V transmission fluid.

You can use Mercon V, Dexron III, the synthetic ATFs like Mobil 1 and Amsoil, the universal ATFs that can be used in place of Mercon V, and most of the highly friction modified ATFs like the Toyota T-IV.

What does the owner's manual say?

I have AMSOIL Universal ATF in the power steering of my Grand Marquis and Navigator. It works well, and really reduced the pump whine on subzero mornings.

ISSUE
MERCON(R) Automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON(R) V as a service fluid for power steering systems originally requiring MERCON(R).

ACTION
Beginning immediately all power steering applications requiring MERCON(R) can now be serviced using MERCON(R) V or MERCON(R) Automatic Transmission Fluid or dual usage fluids labeled MERCON(R) / MERCON(R) V. After July 1, 2007, MERCON(R) Automatic Transmission Fluid will no longer be manufactured, therefore, availability of this fluid will continue until remaining inventory has been depleted.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Service power steering Systems requiring MERCON(R) with MERCON(R) V or MERCON(R) Automatic Transmission Fluid or dual usage fluids labeled MERCON(R) / MERCON(R) V.
CAUTION APPLICATIONS RECOMMENDING TYPE F AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION AND POWER STEERING FLUID MUST CONTINUE TO USE THAT PARTICULAR FLUID. USE OF ANY OTHER FLUID MAY CAUSE REDUCED FUNCTIONALITY OR DAMAGE

Crazyoildude:

Is there some reason that your thread here (from just last week):
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1916681#Post1916681
didn't satisfy your question? Perhaps using the search tool would have helped you find it (although I only had to look back one page to find it immediately.)

A 2004 CV and 2004 GM are the same car platform.

I'm all for sharing good information, but please don't troll ...
