Being quite new to the topic of oil (I used to let the dealer do all the oil changes but am now going to highly recommended independent mechanics and giving them my store bought synthetics), I took a smell of my Quaker State full synthetic and Synpower oils.

QS Syn smells sweet, like perfumed cooking oil while Synpower is quite foul smelling with hints of sweetness.

So for a slightly different and less serious topic, what does your oil smell like?

+1 on Mobil 1 ATF. It is also PURPLE!!!

I would add that -some- Bottles of MaxLife smell like Wax Candles.

Im an Oil Sniffer.

I guess it would be my imagination to say that ive had oil smell like Hazelnut Coffee before....

hey, we're sniffing virgin oil here.... there shouldn't be too many brain cells killed that way! it's the used oil that contains the nasty's!!!

+1 ... To a Point.

I had a Ford Escort i put Lucas in to try to protect against a Radiator that had been ruptured badly by a Road Debris...

.. When that Engine Seized up and acted like it had a Timing Belt snapped but didnt, it (the Engine, or the Oil in it) smelled like Burnt Fried Chicken.

NAPA must have Banana Additive, because i had a bottle (blue) of their Non-oil that smelled very Fruity...

And sniffing "Used Oil" isnt all that bad, either! Its the EXHAUST that they will say -POLLUTES!- And unless you Drink the Antifreeze or accidentally.. Oh i guess ill keep that one to myself, lets just say that Red Bull -looks- like Gas and when they are close to each other in non-approved containers..

...

.. But i have a -REAL- Car now, and All this is MEMORIES!

Now all i need is one of those old Rolls-Royces (the ones from the 80s that cost $14-000 to $22,000 like a Silver Seraph, or a 1982 Ferrari 400i for $22,000 - $25,000), and ill be.. absolutely Beside myself...

Changed the oil in my Kubota today, used Ambra Mastergold 15w40.
Nice non-CJ stuff with loads of zinc. Smelled almost like gear oil, not quite as strong.

I know, New Holland oil in a Kubota... world's going to end.

Heck yea i smell my oil. You can smell fuel oil dilution (if it is bad). I figure that you might as well use all your senses to detect wear.
But be warned your nose is very sensitive when touched with a hot dipstick.
