Son (14 years old) just bought a 1994 Ford F-150 4x4 with the 300 six or 4.9l, 135k miles. The next two years of this trucks life will be tough on the oil because it will be started up moved in out of garage mostly stored outside while he restores. Conventional 10w-30 or 15w-40, for now and the rest of its life?

I'd use 5W30, that's what I use in my 88 E-150 with the 4.9L. Only difference is I use synthetic oil. If you notice consumption issues then consider moving up to a 40 grade oil. 5W30 will provide easier starts than 10W30 or 15W40, especially when it is cold outside. PP 5W30 would be my choice for a conventional oil.

My dad's '91 calls for 5w-30 so I'd assume your '94 would. I would stick with that though a 0/10w wouldn't hurt a thing. I would however, move to a 10w-30 if it were an HDEO.

Dead reliable engines. The only issues my dad ever had were with electronics. Engine still runs strong at 166k with the cheapest dino and Frams (I can't seem to flip him) he can find.

+1

Get some Motorcraft 5 or 10 W30 semi syn. Great product and a great price!!

Those engines are awesome and run a very long time

10W-30 HDEO - Chevron Delo, Rotella, Motorcraft....

With nothing but the vehicle being 'moved around', you need corrosion protection, and HDEO's are good at that.
