The Motorcraft FL400S just got smaller?

As far as I know, yes. The 25230 used to be recommended for the Escort ZX-2 but it has been replaced by the 20195. Now the 25230 is only recommended for a particular Jeep, I can't remember which one. Every other filter manufacturer still recommends the cross-reference to the 25230 for the ZX2 whereas the regular Escort recommends the 20195 and it's equivalent among other manufacturers. My girlfriend's dad uses the 20195 size on his ZX2 before they changed the recommendation and he's had no problems, which leads me to believe they're interchangeable.

Guys,

I did cut open and compare the FL-820s version and I still have a stash of the long ones as well as a few new ones. They have compensated by adding extra pleats to make up for the shorter can. I would use the new one with no reservations whatsoever. It will work just fine. The new ones make it easier to change out. Newer engines do not shear shards of metal that require some super duper filtration. With todays road salt and paper thin bodys, the engine will still outlast the car even with 80% efficiecy.

On the FL-400s, does this fit a taurus? If so I will be able to cut that open for you guys shortly as I have to chanage my friends mothers oil soon. I will be able to cut open an old style filter and get all the measurements, then cut open the new size.

I assume ford will for the same and add more pleats.

it fits the 3.0 vulcan, the focus 2.0L motors up until 03ish, anything that had a FL-2005 now gets the FL400S, also fits a lot of the 3.5L applications as well as the Mazda CX9, and the newer Taurus models with the 3.5L.

I picked up a half-dozen of the larger FL400 filters over my noon hour at a low-volume WM near here. I needed some 3600/FL400 clones anyway and six was all they had. My wife had gone shopping on a larger city over the weekend and I had her search for the larger sizes there, but the ones she saw were the newer-sized, smaller filters. I'll check back there tomorrow and see what sized they restocked the shelf with.
It's really not a big deal, but I'll take a larger filter if I have a choice and I still have some larger competitor branded filters to fall back on.

Don't forget about the 3.8, 3.9, & 4.2 Essex V6's.
These were found in a number of vehicles, such as the older Taurus, T-Bird, Windstar, Freestar, Mustang, F150, E150, and other products.

I bought a brand new '88 Cougar back in Dec. of '87 that had the 3.8 V6. A couple of months later I wanted to change oil and all the books (at the time) called for the big 1A clone filters. I purchased the 1A filter and it turned out that '88 V6 was the first year for the FL400 filters and I had to take it back and exchange it. I guess the non-Ford parts books had just taken everything for granted from previous years.

Kruse, that's some good information there, because I am considering putting an Essex V6 in my Torino (along with a half dozen other engines) and using an '87 or older engine would allow me to use my stash of FL-1A's. THANKS!

If I could give you rep points or something, I would!
