Well I have been searching here a while and thought I would throw this out there. The recommended weight is 10-30 for both the crank and tranny. I just picked up some Castrol Edge 10-30 for the crankcase but would anyone recommend going full synth for the tranny? If not maybe different weights for either? It is my project car, doesn't get more than 4k a year and doesn't move much in the winter (but is run weekly).

Thanks,
Tyler.

You may get a bit smoother shifts from your tranny in colder weather with the synthetic.

Actually there is 15w-40 Rotella dino from PO in there now and he vouched for it. But I have read that the additives can be too much and the weight would also be too much. I also have to get fid of the Fram filter on there now...not sure what the PO was thinking! I'll be putting in 10-30 edge with a pure one filter tomorrow and see what happens. From there if I have issues I'll try the 5w-40 rotella I guess.

As far as the trans, a synth would maybe improve shifting? Currently 10-30 dino (castrol) in there.

Have used redline MTL in about 40 or so classic 900's and 9000's. There is a night and day difference in shifting if you use MTL in a saab.

Redline MTL, Amsoil Synchromesh, and RP synchromax were invented for better shifting in transmissions that used 10w30 engine oil.

Also, I can't remember if the hypoid final drive in the SAAB longitudinal transaxle takes 80w90, but if it does, buy some synthetic 75w90 GL-5 and use it in there.

Maybe this thread should be moved to the transmission and gear oil thread.

Yeah I guess technically I should have used two different threads. but since my 900 uses 10-30 in both I thought I would try keeping it simple using one synth for both. but that redline MTL is highly recommended.
