Hey guys, I just bought a 2005 Kia Optima. It's got 38k mi. 4 cyl, 2.4L engine. I have no idea what the previous owner used as far as oil. The manual says that 5w-20, 5w-30 and 10w-30 are all ok to use. Which should I choose? I've never used 5w-20 before. Is it ok or what? I live in California. The winters get down to 32 and summers up to 104F. Let me know what you think.
Thanks guys.

Just pour in 5W20 or 5W30, the cheaper of the two. 5W20 works fine in CA.

As long as your trips aren't terribly short, just change the conventional 5W20 or 5W30 oil every 7500 miles (or six months) and you'll be fine. Of course, no one on this forum will agree with me on that...

Got an 06.5 2.4L, 4Cyl. At 2K miles I swung 5W-20 Valvoline, which was a free dealer OC, into it.

At 5K miles I put in 5W-20 PP with a Mobil 1 filter.

Your climate is a bit warmer than mine. 5W-20 would be a great winter brew with 5W-30 for summer, which is what I'm going to do here.

Our Kia gets a balance of city and highway miles with about 10-11K annual. Looking at twice a year OCIs.

From the Amsoil website:
2005 KIA OPTIMA 2.4L 4-cyl Engine Code 2350cc
LUBRICANTS & FLUIDS
Engine Oil
Grade 1......API*
SAE 10W-40 XL Synthetic Motor Oil
Synthetic 5W-40 European Engine Oil
-18 To 30°F......10W-30
Above 32°F......30
Above 14°F......20W-40, 20W-50
Above 0°F......10W-40, 10W-50
Above 86°F......40
Below 32°F......5W-30
Below 0°F......5W-20
Looks like 5W20 might be too light for 104F. I think based on your owner's manual, your temp range and the above recommendations, I'd go with a 10W30 year around. Your manual doesn't say anything about a Xw-40?

I'd run a cheap dino, and follow the advice of the critic. I'd run 5w20 for max fuel economy, but it might not make a difference.

There is really no need for him to change weights between summer and winter, particularly in CA. Just run 5w-30 and stick with it.

I live in WI. Can I use 5W-30 (Castrol Syntec or Mobil 1 E.P.) instead of 5W-20? Would it cause any problems?

Thanks.

I am almost in Wisconsin.
The 5-20 would be better in our winters.
Aurora saw -29 F last winter.
When the temps are above harsh winter conditions, the 5-30 will be fine.
