Yesterday I bought oil for the BMW. The reccomended oil is Mobil1 0W-40. Unfortunately, there is 1 quart of 5W-40 that I must have picked up in error. It is recommended for diesel engines but is graded SL.

The question is, is it OK to mix 1 quart of 5W-40 with 6 quarts of 0W-40 for BMW engines or should I go through the hassle of exchanging it at AutoZone (an unpleasant experience at any given time)?

Shouldn't be an issue. But if you do go to AZ, return all the M1 and get GC instead.

Haha, that's exactly what I was going to say, but I refrained :).

EDIT: My brother in law's e36 M3 runs so much more quiet on GC than M1 0w40.

They had a deal - buy 5 quarts of Mobil1 and a filter for $30. Was gonna get the German Castrol but my cheapskate side won.

Well, the AZ deal on GC is even better: 5 quarts and a K&N filter for $28. :)

I didn't see it when I was there. Will check out this weekend.
