As you can see the area around the water pump(I changed it recently for bearing failure) is very clean. I have yet to replace the coolant through out the system, but I did top off with ST all purpose. This is on the Fusion.

If properly maintained Ford Gold/Zerex G-05 is a fine coolant. If run for too long, run too hot or mixed with another coolant you get...

That is FoMoCo Gold mixed with a few gallons of green...the prior owner's idea of a flush. The degas bottle had nice layer of nastiness on it. Flushed, cleaned and refilled with Zerex G-05 and DCA4 and it has been fine.

When I drained/filled my Focus after I got it, I used Peak Global. Got it for like $10/gal at 7-11 nearby. I had lots of scale, etc in my overflow, so I cleaned it out the best I could - I actually think it runs cooler now then when I got it. The dummy gauge on the dash is tad under the halfway point. Scangauge temps are about 170-190 dependant on speeds/load.

What's considered "too hot"? shrug Mine ranges from 192 - 216 (only very shortly if stuck in traffic, otherwise fan kicks in at 212 degree) degrees on a daily basis. Average is about 200. But I replace my G-05 annually and flush/mix it only with distilled water.

IMHO 225-245 for long periods of time, depending on the vehicle of course.

So Motorcraft Gold or Xerex?

Are there better options out there for the Mustang?

Buy whatever is cheapest.

While I hear of people changing to longer life coolants, I'd rather stay with what is approved.

Motorcraft G05 is obviously Ford approved.

Zerex G05 is Mercedes approved and maybe also Ford approved.

G-05/PG isn't necessarily approved for it, but personally I have used it in 2 older diesel vehicles (that originally used green) with no ill effects.

The on-line version of the OP's owners manual says

Add Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B51-A1"

Valvoline publishes Zerex G-05 is approved for Ford WSS-M97B51-A1.

So what's not necessarily approved?
