Here is a link to an article that was published last month in Bass and Walleye Boats Magazine where they tested gear oil with and without water contamination to see how they performed.

The test results sure surprised me, especially how some oils performed great in one test and were dead last in another.

It is interesting reading and thought I'd share it with the forum.

It’s difficult to recognize a “best” lubricant, as each had its strengths and weaknesses. Each is formulated for its specific gearcase needs.

I couldn't see the test results (too small). Sounds like this guy has common sense.

too many places in an outboard foot to leak-
center of the prop shaft hole
edges of piece the prop shaft goes through
shifter linkage
gasket that holds the two foot halves together
upper and lower fill screw gaskets

did I miss any?

Upper driveshaft bearing housing o-ring and d'shaft seals.

On some Johnson-Evinrude engines there is a pinion bearing retainer screw o-ring.
