GM finally release an updated GM4718M list with their GM6094M list. The only difference I see on the 6094 list is that there are more 5w-20's. It could be a sign that GM may be looking to make the 5w-20 change. Not too much change on the 4718 list.

I want to think that our discussions influenced the need to update the 4718 list and include more 5w-20's in the 6094 list.

Cut and pasted to ensure accuracy:

Competing manufacturer's brand. It would be the same as either Goodwrench 5w-20 appearing on Ford's WSS-M2C930-A list or Goodwrench 5w-30 on Ford's WSS-M2C929-A list.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I noticed AMSOIL was missing from this list too. What's the deal there?

Amsoil doesn't use manufacturer aprovals per se (the oil manufacturers PAY for these), they use the "recommended for" note on their application chart to show that THEY tested the oil and found it to be valid for the application in question....

The large oil companies spend MILLIONS to get the approvals and recommendations on their products. It is an expense that Amsoil doesn't feel justified paying from what I understand, which is why they do their own (or 3rd party) testing but don't pay for the approvals/certs.

This also allows them to further improve upon a product even though there may not be an API or ILSAC required change. It gives them the freedom to tweak the formulation without spending big $$$ getting approved all over again for the same API or ILSAC rating. If they pay for the approvals it is not cost effective to change the formulation without a major required change like the up coming GF-5.

I don't want to start a fight with you but that is not an accurate statement. That list is only oils that were certified by GM to meet the standard. It does not mean they are the only oils that actually meet it or that can be used.

If Valvoline Synpower or Castrol Syntec meet or exceed the specification standards they can be used and GM can NOT void your warranty just because they are not certified and not on the list. Under the law GM can not force you to use a certified fluid. All they can do is require you to use a fluid that meets or exceeds the standard in question.

If you read the owner's manual for any mfg, where certain oils or fluids are called for( pretty much every mfg ), you will see they say you must use an oil/fluid that "meets" standard XXXXX not that you must use a certified fluid for that standard. Reason being legally they can not.

it's the imfamous "meets or exceeds" statement. since part of these specs is that the oil has to be tested at pre-qualified labs and the oil companies have to inform and retest before changing the makeup of the oil, it is hard to see how they could "meet or exceed" without actually being on the list. while some of the boutique oil companies will say they aren't on the list because they are "better", i think that is pretty transparent.

if amalie, brad penn and PEP BOYS, can be on the list, i don't think that the requirements are onerous.

I guess you can spend your money on buying better ingredients or buying certifications. In my prior profession the more certifications a guy had usually the less field common sense he had.

It works both ways. Some of the boutique oils I wouldn't go near. Especially when one has Mobil 1 and PP readily available and is officially certified. I think it's a misconception that because it's a "boutique" it is therefore better.

However, respectable small blenders like Amsoil/Redline I trust with full confidence.

you are right, all you have to do is prove that the oil "meets or exceeds"....

have fun

Unless the engine oil is way out of whack, it is almost impossible to find out what oil is in the crank case after running it for a while. You may be able to guess it, but the similarity among many oils makes it impossible for the manufacture to say you violate the warranty requirement by using so and so oil.

I highly doubt Synpower or GM engine are designed such that dino passes but synthetic fails in the same brand.

Glad to see the Mobil 1 0W-30 on the GM4718M list.

That oil is saving me $$ in a Toyota Sienna compared to the YBP I had been using.

No problems with the Pennzoil in 120,000 miles of use. It's great oil.

The M1 is just delivering 1 MPG more.
