Is there an ATF that's compatiable with Texaco ETL 8072-B?
Think a ETL 7045E ATF would be compatible?
http://www.bmwtips.com/tipsntricks/Tranny/GM2000Chart.jpg

It's for a BMW / GM 5L40-E (or 5150?) tranny.

5-speed so it's not a 4L30-E.

Could I use Dexron VI in the BMW tranny?
Redline D4 or D6 ATF?
Amsoil universal ATF?
Castrol Import or Domestic ATF?
A Lubegard additive?

And does anyone know if the CTS and BMW tranny filter and gasket are the same?

Thanks

I found a couple ATF's that should work.
I'm guessing M1 M-V or Castrol Import would work the best for an ARX clean/rinse. What do you guys think?

Given the interchange with BMW and multi-vehicle ATF's and how Redline says D4 ATF is compatible with LT-71141, could Redline D4 also be compatible with ETL-8072B?
How about Amsoil ATF?

LA2634, LT71141; Texaco ETL-7045-E, ETL-8027B, Shell M1375.4
What's odd is that I have an older bottle of Castrol import ATF and it only says LA2634 (Shell ATF) and LT71141 (Esso ATF) for BMW.
Do you think they changed the formulation or just the label?

They don't say anything about Mercon V being compatible with LT-71141.

And Valvo's site doesn't mention anything.

No advice?
No one has a BMW with a GM 5-speed auto tranny?

Give me the year and model of your BMW. My son is the collision manager for a BMW dealership and I'll ask him what they use for drain/refill/flush.

2001 530i with a 12/00 build date, green sticker on tranny pan so it should use Texaco ETL-8072B.
BMW only sells in 20L containers, lowest price I've seen is about $300.
Thanks, I'd appreciate any info you could give.

I called him and he's checking. He believes they use the 20L bulk containers you mentioned but he'll verify. As soon as he gets back to me I'll post.

OK, got an answer...sort of. In order for my son to be positive as which auto tranny you have he would need to last 7 digits of the VIN. So if you wanna post that or just PM me I'll get back to him.

But here's what he found out so far. If you have the GM tranny it specs either Texaco ETL-7045 or Dextron III. However, he stated that you CANNOT mix the two. If you don't know what's currently in there you have to do a total flush and refill.

Another hooker is that the correct fluid is build date dependent. I gave him the 12/00 build date but to nail it down completely he would need that VIN.

Per GMs 2009 5L40E specs: "The Hydra-Matic 5L40 uses DEXRON® III fluid and is filled for life, requiring no maintenance. The fluid is added at the transmission plant eliminating the chance of contamination at the vehicle assembly sites."

Dex VI would be an upgrade to the original Dex III. I have used Amsoil's universal ATF to service the GM units in BMWs at the advice of my builder and have never had any regrets. He says that's pretty much all he uses these days except on a few of the newest units. It could save you about $5 per liter over the original stuff. The Dex VI would save you even more.

Yep, "Lifetime" and Strasbourg France made GM units just don't fit together!

The (Isuzu/BMW/Cadillac) 4L30E came out of the same plant and was lifetime filled with Dex III. Needless to say, they didn't live much past 75Kmi w/out some drain/fills. With some maintenance, I have seen reports of owners getting close to 200Kmi with them. Not all that many automagics will do that.

I was under the impression Dex VI was a lower viscosity spec than Dex III...if so, would it really be an "upgrade" to change-out Dex III for Dex VI in a used transmission?? How does that work?

Amsoil Universal ATF lists ETL 8072B on its list of applications.

I've recently changed a 2002 540i specing Esso LT71141 to Amsoil ATF (LT71141 also being on its list) and it's like a new car. So far so good.

The color of the sticker is irrelevant. You need to go by the part number on the sticker.

And you will get a lot of opinions on this. I can tell you that my friend who has 5 BMWs (well one is a Mini) uses M1 ATF instead of Texaco ETL 8072-B and has for a very long time. If that fluid works OK (which it appears to do) then a generic Dex VI may as well.

My BMW with 5L40 had first issues around 250+Kmiles - first guys at local shop filled in some non specific newer Dex because they wouldn't wait for Texaco being restocked and I got major leaks on the seals between engine/converter, o-rings, damaged one solenoid as consequence of low oil level. All now replaced and filled in with Texaco - no issues any longer.
Aside story is the tranny is still top condition in spite of mileage and it being refilled only 3 times since it left the factory. I am no believer in what GM says on their stickers or propaganda but based on my experience I would check twice seal compatibility with any ATF you intend to use.

Martin.

A bit OT, but I performed a drain and fill with Dexron III every 60k miles or so on the A5S 390R(5L50) in my wife's 2004 X3 2.5i- never touched the filter. According to its new owner, it's still running great at 200k miles.
