THIS is telling you something about the oil you use. By 3K miles, it's sheared way out of operating temperature grade, and the remaining thin oil is slipping past the rings.
If your weather allows it, switch to a heavier base oil (from 5W-XX to 10W-XX). While/if your starting temperatures are above 40F, switch to a mono-grade SAE-30. You'll REALLY see your oil consumption go down.
