Had a friend who had a recent accident with engine damage. Block and main parts of the engine were replaced by a diesel specialist. Now he is noticing a lot of smoke/steam coming from muffler on start-up after having it sit for a few hours. In the morning whjen it is cold it takes two or three tries and about 10minutes of waiting before it starts. Any suggestions or recommendations?

The weather has warmed up here in the past week, and he has experienced no problems with starting or smoke from the tailpipe. The engine specialist placed a 15w40 oil in the car. I wondered if another oil or different viscosity would help with these issues.

Oh my, gee gosh, that is the wrong oil. VW says to only use a synthetic 5w-40 oil that meets the VW 505 oil spec for the ALH motor.
Some oils that people have used with good results are:
Delvac-1
Rotella-t
Amsoil
Red Line

I have used Red Line 5w-40 for the past 160K miles with good results.

One thing to check is the timing. It should be at the center line or slightly above. If the timing is off, hard starts and poor fuel milage can result. Are the glow plugs working? Was the MAF checked?

Yes, it sounds like the timing is retarded.

Your friend should join TDI Club http://www.tdiclub.com and look at the "recommended mechanics" list for PA and MD. There are several TDI pros in your area. "Diesel specialist" is not the same as "TDI specialist".

COPY THAT.
Can't make a better recommendation. Maybe to add Schaeffer's or Petrosynth to that list of oil.
TDI specialists are not always at dealers either. Some VW dealers have one or two, some don't.
Join the club and have it done by a real expert, you'll be glad you did.
