Indian made a transverse 90 degree v-twin with shaft drive before Moto-Guzzi did.

I believe that the 841 was originally designed for the military. The BMW made a good impression with it's shaft drive reliability. That's the reason the 841 was made. None ever made it to military service. I am sure glad someone made a great example of what once was a olive drab Army reject.
 
It was designed for the Army during WWII. Harley and Indian competed for the contract. Harley's model was a flat twin. In the end, the Army didn't buy either model.
