What oil to use in a 2016 Lexus ES350

Just bought a 2016 Lexus ES350 with 105k miles. It’s got the famous 2GR-FE and it takes 0w-20. Dealer maintained since day one, oil was changed every 5,000 miles using the recommended TGMO 0w-20 at my local Lexus dealer. The engine is spotless on the inside looking through the oil fill hole, which I’m really happy about.

I like to do my own fluid changes, and I want to know what the best 0w-20 would be for the es350. Mobil 1 ESP 0w-20 obviously comes to mind, but would Mobil 1 ESP 0w-20 be suitable for this engine long term?

ESP is a very good oil and would be more than suitable.

Here is a concurrent thread that may be helpful:

I just leased my ES350 last week. Why not just buy whatever major brand name is on sale at Amazon or Walmart? Nothing wrong with Quaker State full synthetic. I like either Toyota OEM filters or Full long-life filters available at Napa. Congrats on finding a well-maintained Lexus.

The 2GR-FE isn't particular about lube brand or grade. The wear rates aren't going to be affected by "normal" oil choices or OCIs. Pick what you want; it won't matter to the engine.

I would run a few intervals of Restore and Protect as noted above in the off chance there is some buildup in the ring packs, with the previous 5,000 mile OCI they should be good regardless. I run M1 5W30 EP in the wife's 2GR-FKS, will do a winter run with M1 0W20.

Best off the shelf 0W20.

I’ve been running Mobil1 0W30 ESP in my 2GRFE for the past six months, it does exactly what every other oil I’ve put in it does…perform flawlessly. You could out maple syrup in these things and they just wouldn’t care. Quietly one of the best engines on the planet…decent power, fuel economy, reliability and almost zero oil consumption issues. I’m sitting at 170,000 miles of continues 10,000 mile oil intervals with zero sign of consumption.

I’ve run everything from Pennzoil Platinum 0W20, to Amsoil Signature Series 5W30. And everything in between…Quaker State, house brands, Mobil1 EP, ESP, Amalie, Valvoline Modern Engine, RGT, Pennzoil Ultra. Come to think of it, the only brand I haven’t used is Castrol…maybe that will be next. No wait, Mobil1 0W40 Euro FS is on deck.

My 2grfe had dealer oil changes up to the 74k miles on it at the time I bought it. I have used Mobil 1 0w20, 5w30, and 0w40. Last oil change I went back to 0w20 because I had a stash of it left over. Surprisingly, I can't tell any difference in noise or performance between them. Usually I change at 5k miles unless I am on a road trip. I am thinking my next change will be with Supertech 0w30 or 5w30. Currently am at 120k, just had new sparkplugs installed.

I could in Sienna. 0W20 really made things loud.
The same goes for 3UR-FE in Sequoia, I have now. Once I dumped 0W20 that was put by the Honda dealer that sold me a car, and filled it with Castrol Edge 0W30, you could clearly notice how the engine just felt smoother, with less noise. Same goes for Motul 5W30 I have in now.

Outside of the us the 2gr uses everything from 0w-20 to 20w-50. Use whatever you want but realistically 40 grade is plenty. Even though I'm a thickie I'd still expect to get a lot out of it with a good 0w-20 like esp as long as the engine was taken care of before which that one seems to have been. But I'd always get esp 0w-30 instead.
