What is the correct temperature for checking ATF level?

Allison 1000-2000 series transmissions idle engine in neutral, pull dipstick, hot check at 170-180°F.
Allison 3000-4000 series idle engine in neutral, press up and down arrows simultaneously on control panel, check display prompts for -/+2 quarts or OK.

I check the fluid level multiple times after a cooler line exchange.

Adding small amounts until the fluid levels are in the temperature ranges on the dipstick. Verifying with my infrared temp meter.

I also measure the temperature of the new fluid and wait until it has reached ambient temperature. The fluid is stored in the stone basement of our 1934 home.

I want the new and old fluid to be as close in temperature as possible. This makes the fluid adjustment much easier.

It takes a while and is best done when the OAT is not extreme.
