InsideEVs : Volkswagen ID.3 Attracted 70,000 New Customers To VW Brand.

By: Mark Kane

Volkswagen reports that since the market launch of the Volkswagen ID.3 in September 2020, the company has received more than 144,000 orders in Europe.

Out of that, about 50% or some 70,000 were new customers to the brand, which is significantly above Volkswagen's average of 36%.

The German manufacturer says that the ID.3 is "an absolute hit" in Europe and the best-selling electric model in Western Europe in August.

The ID.3 production currently runs at 1,200 units a day (total of two plants - Zwickau and Dresden) and recently Volkswagen has started production of the ID.3 also in Anting in China, where the car will be launched in Q4 2021.

According to Volkswagen's survey among ID.3 customers in Germany, the most common reasons for purchase were environmental performance (60 percent), innovative technology (51 percent) as well as the personal support provided by Volkswagen’s dealer and service network.

Almost 80% of German customers report also that the ID.3 is the most frequently used vehicle in their household. Around 70% use only "green electricity" (from own photovoltaic system or from their electricity supplier).

Volkswagen has set a target to increase BEV sales out of its total volume in Europe to 70% by 2030.

Klaus Zellmer, Board Member for Sales, Marketing and After Sales at Volkswagen said:

“The car is an absolute hit. It appeals to customers and has shot from zero to take top positions among new registrations in a large number of countries,”

“The ID.3 has tapped into an above-average number of new buyer groups for Volkswagen. Some 70,000 new customers are strong proof that we are exactly on the right track with this vehicle and our electric mobility strategy,”

Volkswagen’s plan was to create third people’s car. First one was Beetle, second one was Golf, and now the third one is ID.3.
Seems that they nailed it yet again! 👍🏻

The only problem with this third people's car is the same problem with all electric vehicles, it's cost. The base model ID3 costs 30,950 GBP ($42,147) which already includes a UK tax payer financed 2,500 GBP ($3,404) discount. All this for the base model with steel wheels and hubcaps, a limited range of 264 miles, and a very much econo car 0-60 time of 9.6 seconds.

Beetle was sold for 40 years. Golf for 50 years (I expect it to phase out in 10 years). So ID.3 will be sold till 2060-2070.

So, maybe we shouldn’t give bad judgements yet, as the game has only just begun. I’m sure ID.3 will be people’s car also on the price point by 2030 (as will happen to other EVs too).

Anything costing more than a 12 year old Crown Vic is too much money on BITOG. Sub 10 seconds-IMHO still is not bad. Teslas (which are much faster) are now approaching prices that are much higher than they were even 12 months ago.

Except the people have spoken with their wallets. Now the #1 selling EV in Western Europe. VW can’t make them fast enough.

I really don’t understand this need to have an EV that does 0-100 in 3s.

According to carsalesbase VW has sold about 44K ID3's this year through to end of August in all of Europe which puts it on track for what 60K. Considering that it's essentially subsidized in every EU country and in some places like Norway the market is totally distorted in favour of EV's the sales of the ID3 (or any EV) don't look that tremendous. The US car market is a little bigger than all of Europe and Honda sold just over 330K CR-V's in 2020 to give you a comparison of a vehicle that does sell well.

Uh, OK. I was only comparing sales of other EV.

Actually, some of the issues are due to the Teslacian fan boys who write the reviews. They show the price of the base model but the acceleration of a higher priced model. Here is the acceleration of a 2021 Tesla 3 base model and some comparisons of 2019 models. Enjoy.
