What everyone's opinion on the Valvoline SynPower? I purchased it at a new Wal-Mart over the weekend at $18.97 per 5 quart jug! I think it is an excellent price for full synthetic motor oil! The new jug has a very cool look to it as well!

new jug? what does that look like?

and as far as i know, people around here say synpower is good. its a good synthetic and doesn't have any issues or anything. i've seen this question asked before... in fact, i may have even posted the same question once myself. if its a good price, buy it. thats what everyone will tell you.

Well, it's not really 'full synthetic' as you'll learn around here. It's a Grp III oil, like Pennzoil Platinum.

I'm sure it's a fine oil. I don't see many posts about it, so feel free to post UOA results if you want to.

Sometimes proper viscosity, length of OCI and filter choice are more important than the brand of synthetic purchased.

Any name-brand synthetic priced under $4 per quart is a good-good buy. You did well with your purchase.

My only issue with Synpower is the starburst and "Energy Conserving" symbols. I'd go with Maxlife Synthetic over Synpower.

Synpower seemed not like too good of a match for the 2.2 Ecotec in my HHR...burned about 1/2 a quart at 5K...no other oil I have had in there has done that.(And that includes Valvoline A/C)

Is there a difference? Isn't "consumed" just a euphemism for "burnt"?

I know, I always say consumed with my cars and when it becomes obvious with blue smoke out the tailpipe I will probably say burnt, but the cat eats up much of the blue smoke so I am told.

Beef up that there Synpower with a quart or two shot of 20w50!

if it is the first run of synpower in your new engine, it may take the second oil change interval for the oil consumption to stabilize

i agree

Yeah I guess consumed just sounds nicer than burnt lol...I've done about 6 oil changes on the HHR and the Synpower is the only one that "consumed" oil....and that was with only 3472 miles on the oil. The 4378 miles on Kendall GT1 Synth Blend that was in there before didn't consume anything nor did the 5846 miles on Havoline Synthetic(with 1 quart of Havoline dino) that was in afterwards. Right now just around 5K on this run of PP and oil still steady on the stick.

For whatever reason the Synpower was the exception so far...no consumption with the Valvoline A/C 3 changes before the Synpower

There have been a number of SynPower threads of late. If you are using it in a vehicle that must meet GM4718m specs, it is a bad choice as it is not on their approved list. And Valvoline says it never will be, but Ashland will "stand behind it 100%". I don't feel real comfy with that in the event of a warranty question.

Anything with high-performance variants of the LS engine, turbocharged engines like in the new Cobalt SS and Solstice turbo, and certain Cadillac models.

It tests for deposit control and oxidation at high temperatures with an extended sequence IIIE test.

I have the synpower 5W30 in my corolla with 2756 miles on it with a maintenance dose of auto-rx. still amber colored and full on the stick

I just wrote Valvoline an e-mail today asking what base stocks are used in formulating the Synpower and if the oil met GM4718M, below is their response:

"Our Valvoline SynPower 5w30 does meet the performance requirements for the GM 4718M specification. We use a premium Group IV basestock for our SynPower motor oils."

Looks like an excellent oil for $18.97/5 quart jug!!!

The MSDS for Synpower 5w30 says …

64742-54-7 … 70 - 80% …. (this is Group III)

The 5W-40 MSDS says…

64742-54-7 … 50 - 60%

So, the 5W-40 may make up the rest of the base oil with PAO.

Overall, some of the various grades may contain some PAO, but they generally look to be Group III based.

The thing is, they say they use Group IV, but that doesn't mean that it's all Group IV, it could be 1% Group IV for all we know.
