Hey guys Im starting to use alittle oil in a 4.6L ( ford V8 motor. 124,000 miles on it. They are nortorious for leaking valve seals. It's a pretty expensive to have fixed.Im keeping this car for 1 1/2 years. I use Havoiline 5w30 in it for it's life. 3000 mile OCI . Would going to 10w30 slow down the oil useage ? TIA oiler.

Try using one of the High Mileage oils. The seal conditioners in them may curb your oil consumption if it's coming from leaking valve seals.

You may also try an AutoRX treatment. That's been known to completely arrest oil leaks due to stiff, dirty seals.

I agree with G-Man on this one. Try any of the High Mileage oils and I bet your consumption will be reduced.

What year is the engine? When I got my '96 4.6L it used 1qt/500miles. Previous owners used 10w30 conventional. I switched to M1 blends which proceeded to free the rings of carbon, and unloaded a particulate nightmare. I have managed to reduce oil consumption to 1qt/2500miles if I don't drive hard. Try the ARX.

Try some 15w40 HDEO if you're not looking to spend much money on oil, especially if it's going out the tailpipe. High mileage oil might help too, I've got a 93 Crown Vic with the good ol' 4.6, and when I tried 5w30 Maxlife dino it cut the oil usage down a lot.

Guys it's a 1996 ThunderBird ( 4.6L ) . Bought brand new and has used Havoline 5w30 pretty much exclusively through out it's life. It has always had 3000 mile OCI . I just figured it's the valve seals. It's a norm in these year motors.
I will try the highmilage oils first I guess. If that don't help out I will try ARX. Where to get this ARX treatment ? It seems to be useing about 1/2 quart per 1000 miles. While it has always NEVER used oil in it's first 100,000 miles in this engine. Thanks guys for the help and replys. Oiler.

This is a typical problem for 4.6L Fords. You may have to experiment to see what works best for you. A 15w40 or high milage oil will be your cheapest bets. Give each a shot at your usual OCI and see if it helps. Having the valve guide seals replaced can cost thousands of dollars and usually isn't worth it unless you plan on keeping the car forever or know someone who can do it on the side for less money.
