"Even though individual models vary widely, Detroit automakers overall still had more domestic parts in their vehicles when weighted according to sales, says an analysis from a pro-Detroit trade group.

Detroit's Big 3 derived about 77% of their parts from U.S. and Canadian factories from domestic sources. That compares with slightly less than half for Japanese brands overall, according to the Automotive Trade Policy Council, which represents the domestic manufacturers in trade issues. Among Japanese brands, Honda had the most domestic content at 59%.

"The data is clear: Domestic auto plants create more jobs in this country than overseas producers who locate here," says United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger"

This pretty much sums it up. Unfortunately GM and Ford are sourcing more and more parts from china to compete price wise. We all suffer quality wise.

454MAG - the difference in content is the difference between a large leak in the Titanic and an even LARGER leak in the Titanic. Any foreign content is a foreign aid package disguised as a competitive trade package. The auto-industry is the most brokered ..since it reaches into so many wallets. Canada needs help ...build a plant. Oz needs help ..assemble Japanese Mitsubishis and import them for sale here. Israel makes fuel filters...etc..etc..etc.

Do you really think that it costs that much less to manufacture any item in any place else except the 3rd world?? Any industrialized nation has similar costs of living . identical costs for energy ..they may have less invested in defense.

One thing that I think gets lost in all this no matter who is what is the truly unique trade and industry history with regards to Canada and the United States . It deserves its own category really .

Under NAFTA parts - parts made in Mexico, the U.S., and Canada are considered "North American Content" from what I understand?

This being the case the percentage of content could be kind of misleading?

I think so but perhaps in a different way than some .
Short version ; it would take somewhere between hmmmm ..... dont really want to think that hard - time for a WAG so maybe 5 -10 years of say , all United States and Canadian sales being sourced from Canadian plants to equalise the relationship - you have to know the history of it to see that . Might be more depending .
NAFTAs record speaks for itself . It has been and will continue to be a loser for Canada and the USA in terms of manufacturing and the automotive sector and therefore the country at large .What is always lost in these schemes is the way for all to benefit rather than the few or one entity vs all others .

Gary's analogy is the correct one - ships been taking on water and ice for quite a while - you know the rest of the story - just a question of when not if .
Some would have you believe this is a good thing . Some are shoveling ice .Some have no idea the ship stopped .
There is a better day available - thru the water and after the fire . And yes there will be trade
