Edith Delgado, 18, was allegedly racing her white 1998 Ford Mustang at speeds up to 100 mph (161 kph) on a highway around 9 p.m. Wednesday (0400 GMT Thursday) when she tried to pass the SUV carrying the royal couple, said CHP Officer Ricky Franklin.

MS Delgado excaped without injury after causing the death of 3 people.

Not trying to be a smartA., but what does this have to do with an "unsafe" SUV?

quote:

No if famaly of 3 whoud traval in a sedan they most likely whoud not flip over and die.

The energy involved with any mass over a few onces at over 100 mph can kill. How much does a Mustang weigh? The energy instantly (or not so instantly) coming to halt....would be large. I doubt the flip killed the people. Look for the true root cause.

"Delgado's car slammed into the driver's side of the Explorer, causing it to swerve across several lanes before tumbling to a stop on its roof, Franklin said."

It was not a head on. They die because they flip an SUV over

Yes, because of one stupid person 3 people die, I do agree with you on this one. However SUV was not T-boned, it was side swiped by Stang.

Maybe if the family was in a small car rather than an SUV they would have been pushed off the road into a tree and all died.

There is only one place to assign blame for those deaths. Hint - it's not the SUV.

A bit dated but many people drive cars and SUV's of this vintage:

quote:

# Do SUVs have higher rollover rates than other types of vehicles?

Yes. In 2000, SUVs had the highest rollover involvement rate of any vehicle type in fatal crashes -- 36 percent, as compared with 24 percent for pickups, 19 percent for vans and 15 percent for traffic cars. SUVs also had the highest rollover rate for passenger vehicles in injury crashes -- 12 percent, as compared to 7 percent for pickups, 4 percent for vans and 3 percent for passenger cars.

Yes, SUVs do have a higher center of gravity and are easier to flip, but if drivin correctly they tend to stay 4 wheels on the ground. Any vehicle that is struck by another vehicle traveling at those speeds will lose control. Whether a car would have even been able to regain control, no one will ever know. But I do know that I would rather try my odds flipping in an SUV rather than the point of impact being almost eye level with me. What do you have against SUVs anyway? You are trying to hard to demean them, that whole Ford/Firestone thing has been over with for ages.

That's one of the most ridiculous statements I've seen in a while.

But even so, are trucks/SUVs more likely to roll over? Sure, at least if they're real trucks and not these glorified station wagons most SUVs have become. But why is that such a bad thing? It's the nature of the beast. If people want to drive vehicles that are more likely to roll, why shouldn't they be allowed to? The underlying theme here seems to be that SUVs rolling is a travesty that Big Brother MUST do something about. For crying out loud, let people make the decision to drive whatever the heck they want. People die in car accidents- it's a fact of life. If everyone would just accept that and move on, we could worry about more important things. I'm just so sick of hearing safety weenies droning on and on about how unacceptable it is that people are injured/killed/whatever on the highways and we need to do this and that to protect people from themselves. Get over it. People like that are the reason we have seatbelt laws, the single biggest slap in the face of personal freedom there is in this country.

Maybe the FTC should get involved with the false advertisting of SUV's as safe......

How did you get this idea???
The underlying theme here is that SUV are not as safe as people led to believe.

No the government should be involved in teaching idiots that driving 100mph makes them likely to kill people. This would tend to take care of itself but for the killing of innocent people.

Everytime you make something idiot proof, they invent better idiots.

Or as my favorite comic Ron white said: You cant fix stupid.

But SUV's handle anything, sure they have the same ground clearance as a honda civic but those TV ads with the big SUV's going through the snow and passing everyone buy just prove they are the safest type of vehicle ever!

if someone wants to pay $80 to $120 to fill up their tank, take 5 tried to park it at the store, and get passed like they are going backwards, then flip and die who are we to intervene? let people have their false sense of security.

they seem to feel that the price they pay to fill up is worth the protection the paper tank provides.

It's really unclear as to what happened, but it sounds like the SUV driver may have sped up to keep the Mustang from passing:

Delgado, who was not injured, was jailed on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and engaging in a speed contest, Franklin said.

A "contest" requires at least two "contestants". Who was the other "contestant"?
