Wanting to do a drain & fill on my 2 suv’s. 1. 2002 suburban 1500 4wd 220k : 2. 2006 Buick Rainier 200k AWD. I’ve always used GM Auto track 2 but recently I’ve seen people recommending Dex Vl. What would be best for these 2 machines. I can’t remember the fluid capacity for either T-case, is Amsoil still a safe site to get accurate info ? Thanks

Auto-Trak II is still the recommended fluid for your older NVG transfer cases.

New transfer cases from Magna Powertrain specify Dex VI, but GM has not recommended that for backward compatibility in other transfer cases.

Personally, I wouldn't run Dex VI. If your looking for a lower cost alternative to Auto-Trak II, I'd stay in the Dex III family, which is what Auto-Trak II was based on.

Both vehicles will be right about 2 quarts to fill.

Looks like a couple three quarts ATF depending which unit you have. I assumed 5.3L.

Link for 5.3L Suburban

Same ATF recommendation for the Rainier: Amsoil ATF

Thanks!

From your owners manuals which you can easily get on the internet:

For the 2002 Suburban:

It it has an “Auto” stetting on your four wheel drive setting: Autotrak 2
If it is a “Stabil-track system” (you can get that answer from your dealer with the VIN) Dexron III. Check with the dealer as that may now be Dexron 6.

For the Buick Rainer: Autotrak 2.

No way would I put Dexron 6 in an application calling for Auto Track 2. The Auto Track 2 has friction modifiers for the clutches within the transfer case.

It’s true that the MP systems (Magna Powertrain systems) , went to Dexron 6. Google Magna Powertrain and you can read when they did that.

Thanks for the answers. I believe I’ve seen Valvoline Autotrak 2 Fluid. This surprised me because it use to be a GM only fluid. Did GM switch to Magna powertrain around 2007 ?

Yes, around 2007-2008. They show up on the 2008 owners manuals for the pickups. On the pickups they are the MP 3023 and MP 3024. The’re the transfer cases used with the automatic four wheel drive system with the “auto” setting on the round dial on the dashboard. The 3023 is for the half tons and the 3024 are for the 3/4 tons. They use Dex 6. If you search “Magna”, on our search function you’ll find more articles.

Not sure when Buick adopted them.
