Tragic Police Shooting in My Town

I suspect the tragic police shooting in Tremonton, Utah has made national news, and most of you have heard about it already. It happened only a few blocks from my home.

Two officers killed and one wounded, along with his K9, while responding to repeated silent 911 calls. The neighbors managed to talk the shooter into stopping the shooting, and surrender to police.

I don't personally know these officers, but I suspect I have may have casually met them at one time or another, as the food pantry that I volunteer at shares a parking lot with the police station, and from time to time the officers will come into the pantry to talk to the pantry manager.

The local Boy Scout troop have lined the street in front of my house with American flags, and someone has came and put blue ribbons on all the trees lining the street, in preparation for a procession that will happen later today, to take the fallen officers from the medical examiners office to the mortuaries where services will be held.

My neighbors heard the gun shots last night, but my wife and I missed them. Perhaps the tv was turned up too loud for the movie we were watching. But the sirens were one after another as officers from surrounding communities all responded to assist. It's reported that between 40-50 officers were at the scene.

Tremonton is a farming community of about 10k, so many of us know someone involved in the incident. So it has really impacted the community.

Please remember the families of these fallen officers, and also the family of the shooter. I am sure they are all suffering.

I heard about it on a News app I subscribe to, this morning. It sounds like it was a domestic call. The same type of call my best friend was called to over 30 years ago, and resulted in him justifiably shooting and killing a suspect. He never got over that, and I believe was a factor in his untimely demise.

My sincerest condolences to the families of the slain officers. I hope the wounded officer and his K9 recover.

It was a domestic dispute/violence call, but with nothing but a silent 911 call, the officers weren't sure until they got there. Unfortunately, thing turned bad way too quick for these officers to even have a chance to defend themselves.

The wounded officer has already been released from the hospital and is home, and his K9 is also doing well, but being kept for another night or two at the vet office.

Man this was sad to hear about.... I always thought that the Tremonton/Brigham City area was one of the more chill areas on the Wasatch Front. Terrible to hear about. Prayers for all affected by this.

What is wrong with us these days?
These cops were merely responding to a call and the assailant had no idea who they were.
How do you kill someone without reason, someone you don't even know?
This is so sad on many different levels.
I don't favor state ordered execution, but this guy is a poster child in support of it.

Food pantry in Northern Utah? Bishop's Storehouse?

A similiar situation happened near me a month ago in Lorain Ohio. Two officers ambushed WHILE HAVING LUNCH in their cruisers on a dead end street. One was killed who lived just a half mile away from me. His partner and a responding officer were also shot. They did fatally shoot the assailant. The procession from the medical examiner to the local funeral home in my town had around 250 police cars and the funeral procession to down town Cleveland had around six hundred vehicles. It was one of the saddist event I experienced , never seen anything like it and hope I never see it again.

Same in WA. Parkland (south of Seattle). Ambushed in a restaurant.

The really bad thing is that the assailant will probably get life and live on the taxpayers dime for decades. The families of the victims will live a highly altered and less fulfilling life.

You can watch the procession live, as they move the fallen Officers from the medical examiner, back to their home towns.

It was quite something to see how far away that police had came from, to support the procession. There was one from Moab, which is an almost 5 hour drive. I counted over 85 motorcycle officers alone. It was very touching to see it all. But also, very sad to think that it had to take place.

I don't know if you can tell it from the video, but the news helicopter kept quite a distance from the procession, so as to not distract from the event. I thought that was very respectful.

Yes, I totally understand. When things first started unfolding Sunday night, and bits and pieces started being reported, at first I could not comprehend that this was happening in our community, and kept thinking that the social media comments had to be wrong.

The perp has a history of domestic violence charges. Combine that with what has been reported by the neighbors, that he was extremely intoxicated, and more of the pieces start fitting together.

I'm not excusing his actions in the slightest. But being a small community, I know this is a tragedy not only for the families and friends of these fallen and wounded officers, but also for the family of the perpetrator. My heart aches for all of them.

Well-said, so many people's lives are affected by this. I hope everyone can get the healing that they need from this tragedy.
